Russian Tank With ‘Cope Cage’ Covered In Explosive Reactive Armor Emerges

Video shows a Russian T-72B3 tank from its Western Military District thundering through the mud with an overhead metal screen, widely termed “cope cage” by Ukrainian troops, with an added layer of what appear to be Kontakt-1 explosive reactive armor (ERA) bricks on top.

The full video from the Russian Ministry of Defense showed the tank providing drone-corrected indirect fire using its 125mm cannon at high elevation. It nearly takes out the drone filming its attack with overpressure from the gun.

Cope cages began appearing on Russian armored vehicles in late 2021 amid the pre-war buildup as a counter to loitering munitions and drones, particularly the Turkish-made TB-2 used in the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh War and later by Ukraine against Russian forces. It seemed there was also hope, albeit misguided, that they could defeat anti-armor guided missiles capable of top-attacks, as well.

As the war progressed, cope cages found their way to TOS-1 thermobaric rocket launchers and Soviet-era T-62s pressed into service after heavy losses. Russian rear-area troops soon adopted similar improvised, “Mad Max” armor in the face of attacks by Ukrainian troops behind the lines.

Land armored vehicles and naval surface combatants are obsolete against a technologically sophisticated enemy.

Russian military “ideas” that from time to time we see in the Ukraine war remind me of an x wife...........”wishful thinking”.

So the second shot fired does the job after the first shot reactive armor shoots its load.

Driving around in a tank with Claymores glued to your hull is fun, eh?

Russian soldiers have discovered that many of the ablative armor blocks on their tanks are just painted cardboard. Someone looted the budget, and left the Russians boys defenseless.

Might. Be interesting field test. Depends on what they are defending against.

Is it just me being naive, but I cannot imagine our troops fighting a war like this.

When you see American Tanks in battle, it’s like dozens if not hundreds saturating the enemy.

Her you see a column of a couple Russian tanks, or like one or two tanks moving along a road alone....WTF?

You don’t see our troops in fox holes....sitting ducks. Isolated.

I mean, what the hell is going on?

ARe the Russian generals that stupid?

One gets the feeling that they’re just winging it out there.

And in spite of this, by the sheer numbers, they seem to be winning by attrition.

That is not going to work. Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) requires the armor of a tank backing it to work. If the backing is too thin, the ERA will not only fail to protect the vehicle, it can cause damage it in addition to the weapon that triggered it to go off.

Edit Before Posting: This is assuming the ERA contains the explosive elements, not cardboard.

Front toward enemy!

The Russkie conscripts would be aiming them at Moscow, then!

Should do a good job protecting against explosives dropped by drones from directly above.

Not going to do so well against low tree limbs.

Version II needs a more irregular layout to help against detection.
