How Florida put the 'day' back in Election Day

Florida elections have come a long way since the "hanging chad" debacle of 2000. During the 2022 midterms, the state reported the results of all elections within two hours of polls closing, and a new report examines the election law changes that have been credited for the turnaround.

The 2000 presidential election between then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush and then-Vice President Al Gore was decided by the 25 electoral votes from Florida, which didn't announce its results until five weeks after Election Day.

The delay was due in part to difficulties in determining how to count "hanging chads," or loose flaps of paper on the punch-card ballots then in use. After Florida certified Bush as the winner, Democrats sued for a recount, which was ended by a Supreme Court ruling that ensured Bush's election.

In the two decades since, Florida has upgraded its election laws to prevent a repeat of 2000, while other states, such as California and Colorado, are taking days or weeks to announce all of their election results.

Florida tallied all 7,785,277 ballots and announced all election results before 9 p.m. on election night in 2022.

That’s because they are a republican state that wants to do so. Democrat states could do this, but then they couldn’t cheat as easily.

The main reason elections are run much better in Florida Last cycle is DeSantis fired Brenda Sipes, and a couple other democratic crooks/hacks who ran elections in Broward, Dade, Palm Beach..He put in professionals to run it honestly. It was one of his first moves as governor.

If you control the votes, it doesn’t matter who is the candidate or how they campaign.

To me that’s mostly true, Arizona is the state I can think of that was a Republican state that has allowed Democrats to run the election system and now we see the results.

If you could take Florida’s election laws and people and plop them down in Arizona, that state would be solidly Red right now.

IMO, the Republicans who are out there fighting for better election laws have a rotten inept strategy, they are fighting the machines, the machines are not the issue, Florida has shown that, it’s the people and laws that are the issue.

If Arizona got rid of the machines tomorrow the outcome of the elections would not change until you make changes to the laws and people running the elections.

One quibble with the article, it should point out democrats wanted a selective recount in 2000. As written it makes it sound like W was installed as POTUS and wasn’t the legitimate winner. Even press investigations after the fiasco concluded W would have won, only the margin would have changed.

I can’t believe there are little banana republics spread out all over America that are still counting “votes” from November 2022’s election.

Misleading title.

The counting is done in a day.

But the vote ballot generation is done for many days, early.

I could go on with the listed points in the article.

The biggest difference, IMHO, is that Florida says your ballot must be received BY ELECTION DAY to be counted. Period. States mail out ballots and give voters WEEKS to fill them out and mail or drop them off. If you can’t do it in time to arrive BY ELECTION DAY, then FU. You didn’t care enough to matter.

Such a low bar.

5. paper ballots counted electronically;

6. pre- and post-election audits;

The paper ballots are still counted by black box machines. Both the first count AND the audits.

If steps are taken to ensure election security and integrity, then how are democrats supposed to ever win elections?

Thanks for posting. I just sent this to my two state Reps and state Senator in Idaho telling them we need to adopt these reforms and that Idaho should be a leader, not a follower in election integrity.
