College Board needs to admit that it’s sole utility is to sort out high-performing whites and Asians. It’d free the test to be what it was originally intended to be, an IQ and core knowledge test.

Right now the test is half that (hard questions) and half giveaways (easy questions) for lower level students.

“Is there anything stopping a prospective employer from requiring their job applicants to take the SAT as part of the job application process?”

Griggs vs Duke Power.

A SCOTUS decision in 1971 that essentially killed the ability of employers to administer their own tests.

It didn’t prohibit testing outright but it made companies vulnerable to constant EEOC lawsuits, so it’s a defacto prohibition.

Companies responded by requiring college degrees for virtually every non-menial position, letting colleges do the vetting that they could no longer practice.

https://supreme.justia.com/cases/federal/us/401/424/#

“Duke Power Co., 401 U.S. 424 (1971) Even if there is no discriminatory intent, an employer may not use a job requirement that functionally excludes members of a certain race if it has no relation to measuring performance of job duties.”

Griggs v. Duke Power (1971) basically required any such tests to be strictly limited to the skills needed to perform the specific job.

Any general aptitude or IQ tests would be a quick way to get an EEOC lawsuit.

OK, I was thinking of aptitude in a narrow sense.

It was pretty funny—I was on a work call with some HR types and the issue came up of requiring testing as part of applying for jobs. The black people on the call were enthusiastically all for it, and the white female leftists were left to tell them: “Umm, that might have an impact on certain groups.”

Too funny. The blacks were enthusiastic even after that and said “bring it on!” (the testing), unafraid. And good for them.

SAT used to be more of an IQ test (when it was a Standardized Aptitude Test) but now it isn’t (it’s now a Standardized Achievement Test).

The point now is that it’s the only thing we have left, other than AP tests, that is STANDARDIZED. Every student in the world takes the same test the same day.

How convenient to pass the buck onto Asian Americans being to bright.
More than likely, the real reason is to keep funneling in ill prepared, less qualified other racial groups who don’t score very well at all.
Academia is one of the big enemies of this country.

The employer has the burden of proof (Griggs vs Duke Power).
The scuttlebutt when I was in school was that an employer couldn’t ask you what your SAT scores were.

I put them on my resume but I don’t think it did me much good (GRE’s were Math 780, Analytical 680, Verbal 580)...SAT’s were Math 740, Verbal 610.

Interesting. I’m not really familiar with how it’s changed.

A number of job applications asked for GPA information. I would have preferred they asked my SAT. It was better, though not quite as qood as yours (V:640, M:680, LSAT: 40).

“ Aptitude tests for employment are generally not legal.”
*****************************************************

Really? Over the years I’ve had to take such tests a number of times as a step toward getting jobs.

Far too many institutions care more about increasing the size of faculty and administration with the corresponding padding of their compensation. Real education is just an afterthought in too many curriculums.

A few years ago I’d agree; now I believe this is being done solely to admit completely unqualified non-students (just to bill tuition) as more and more non-blacks avoid college. Rather than admit they are admitting people who score 200 on the SAT, they’ll just erase the requirement.

The main purpose in eliminating ANY standardized test is to conceal from parents and taxpayers how little their children have learned; as a parent I can tell you I’ve never seen young people who know so little believe they actually know a lot. They’ve been thoroughly deceived, and only realize it when they head into the job market and realize how little they offer to employers.

MCAT is the same - when I took it it was an IQ test, now it’s a subject matter test.

First offered in 1926 by the College Board, the SAT has faced controversy throughout nearly a century of testing.
Prior to that it was called the "College Entrance Examination Board," which was formed in 1899. The first admissions tests had started by the 1870s among the early colleges, who later joined to form the "Board". The original purpose was to measure student ability independent of grades, preparatory school or race/religion.

The sad irony is that the test that was started for "blind" measurement of merit has itself entered a state of slow death by racial politics. In 1993, College Board announced that "SAT" didn't stand for anything, as "scholastic aptitude test" was deemed racist. It still used the phrase, "reasoning test", until 2016, but that sure had to go.

College Board has only itself to blame. The test is being dumbed down once again to be administered digitally, couched in terms of "accessibility", etc., etc. -- but which is a blatant financial move as it will enormously lower the costs of test administration (no more moving paper around).

The “good” news is the Diversity Equity, and Inclusion Departments will expand exponentially and the STEM Departments will be able to stop hiring so the colleges won’t lose money.
