Biden says security for the Philippines is 'ironclad'

The U.S. recommitted to a security pact with the Philippines on Monday as concerns grow about China’s influence in the Pacific.

Both President Joe Biden and leader Ferdinand Marcos Jr alluded to pressure from Beijing in a White House visit.

The trip marks a sharp turnaround after a decade of icier relations with Manila.

"The United States also remains ironclad, remains ironclad in our commitment to the defense of the Philippines, including the South China Sea. And we are going to continue to support the Philippines' military modernization goals."

A joint statement said new guidelines for stronger military ties meant any attack on Philippines armed forces or public vessels would trigger American defense commitments under a 1951 treaty.

"It is only natural that the Philippines look to its sole treaty partner in the world to strengthen and to redefine the relationship that we have.”

Since taking office last year, Marcos has warmed up to Washington, in contrast to his Beijing-friendly predecessor Rodrigo Duterte.

Biden will make sure there is “ironclad” security for the Philippines - but is A-OK with leaving the southern border of the U.S. not only unsecured, but wide open.

The PI is 1000x more important to US interests than Ukraine.

Agree. I still don't understand why they kicked the US Navy out of Subic Bay years back. Do we still have US forces at Clark AFB?

The economy of Europe is about $15 trillion. And the Philippines?

Those finding a reason to surrender Europe will also find a reason to surrender Asia. But they don’t want to do it at the same time and expose their Anti Americanism so totally.

PI is geostrategic important. It oversees $5 trillion in worldwide commerce, much of it by US treaty allies.

UKRAINE is of no interest to the US whatsoever.

It is the UKRAINE loyalists, who refuse to recognize the fact that US and Ukrainian interests are existentially different...that are the anti Americans and enemies of the American people.

They’re even dumb enough to equate European/NATO security with the security of Ukraine.

Interesting. On my map Ukraine and its NATO neighbors threatened by a revanchist Russia are part of Europe.

I suppose Taiwan is part of China on your map? That certainly would simplify the surrender of Asia to the Chinese Communist Party.

The surrender caucus can always find a reason to surrender to America’s enemies. That much is clear by now.

“On my map Ukraine and its NATO neighbors threatened by a revanchist Russia are part of Europe.”

Either Ukraine is handing Russia it’s ass, or Russia is a threat to all of Europe.

Which is it?

It cannot be both.
