Hundreds of Army aviation officers who were set to leave the military are being held to another three years of service after they say the branch quietly reinterpreted part of their contract amid retention and recruitment issues.
The shift has sparked an uproar among the more than 600 affected active-duty commissioned officers, including some who say their plans to start families, launch businesses and begin their civilian lives have been suddenly derailed.
“We are now completely in limbo,” said a captain who had scheduled his wedding around thinking he would be leaving the military this spring.
That captain and three other active-duty aviation officers who spoke to NBC News spoke on the condition of anonymity out of fear of retaliation.
As part of a program known as BRADSO, cadets commissioning from the U.S. Military Academy or Army Cadet Command from 2008 and 2020 were able to request a branch of their choice, including aviation, by agreeing to serve an additional three years on active duty.
For years, the Army allowed some aviation officers to serve those three years concurrently, and not consecutively, along with their roughly contracted seven or eight years of service.
In a phone call with reporters Thursday, Army officials admitted "errors" in the system, which they noticed a few months ago, led to the discrepancy.
"We are fixing those errors, and we are in communication with the unit leadership and impacted officers," said Lt. Gen. Douglas Stitt, deputy chief of staff of G-1, which is in charge of policy and personnel.

I suspect that the consecutive 3 years was needed at the beginning, then we wanted new recruits, and now we are back to needing the additional 3 years.
executive decisions.
I left after 8 years, my chances of promotion to Major were between slim and none. No way did I desire to endure crappy assignments for 4-5 years in exchange for a severance check.
It was a good decision.
Anyone who joins the US Armed Forces is an idiot and deserves what is coming.
The problem with promoting people based on sexual kink, color, NEPO (powerful daddy), political party is folks don't want to follow these people. Throw in a 'commander in Chief' who obviously has contempt for traditional Americans (the people who do the work and staff the military) and you get the mess we're in how.
The people in power in Washington know the above. And it's what they want - the goal for them is to create a 'military' that has the same 'enemies' as Homeland, the DOJ, FBI and 'intelligence': traditional Americans. They'll staff the military with illegals... people who don't give a damn if they're shooting Americans. Iran used this technique against Iranian students - 'home town boys' didn't want to kill their school mates - so they brought in soldiers with no allegiance to Iranian citizens.
This is classic totalitarian crap - so please don't worry these stupid moves are accidental - they're making choices to make things worse on purpose. If we've figured it out - they've also figured it out.
No sane person would ever join the evil US military.
If we hadn’t cut and run in Afghanistan, if we hadn’t let the military go woke and hate on all white recruits, then we would be meeting our recruitment goals.
This is a direct result of Biden’s horrendous defense policies.
“ I’d say the 13 dead at the Kabul airport were cannon fodder. This is not an insult to those soldiers, it is an insult to their leadership who put them in a place to serve no function but to die for Democrat schemes.”
This is exactly what I was thinking when I read the retort regarding cannon fodder!!
Quit defending Biden.
That is a lot of hate for a guy who calls himself a terrorist.
The military is still a chance of a lifetime for many jobs, and activities that are never to be seen or experienced otherwise.
What? Do they think they live in a free country or something?
Try not being so childish.
All military branches stop being woke, get rid of all neocon policies, and much of the problem will be solved.
“I’d say the 13 dead at the Kabul airport were cannon fodder.”
And I would say the POWs from Vietnam who were left behind in either SEA or Soviet Union felt like cannon fodder as well.
On the bright side, they can have as many Homos and High Heels as they want.
LOL!!!
I am making a political statement. So step off.
Bump!
That argument had validity up until the end of the Cold War.
At this point, the US military is in the service of an amoral empire.
Ahh the old point system. My dad fought in North Africa, Italy, and France, Belgium and Germany and he didn’t see home till October of 1945.
I agree. What is to be answered in the future is why? Was this really an "oversight" or was it deliberate so as to attract people to serve in the Army? And now, that there is a recruitment shortage, the Army decides that a "mistake" was made?
