In my opinion the Black theology movement is an American phenomenon like the Mormons, Pre-Tribulation rapture, Jehovah’s witnesses, Seventh Day Adventists and Christian Scientists - arose in the 1800s in very specifically American circumstances.

Slavery is not exclusive to black or dark skinned peoples as we all know, but it became exclusively like that in North America in the 1800s until the civil war. And the lingering effects of that prejudice lasted.

I think it died out in the 60s and 70s, but then a counter-reaction has created a yo-yo effect of escalating alienation and prejudice.

How can we solve this? I don’t know.

I do know that I don’t feel safe when I am in a poor black area, but then I don’t feel safe when in a poor white Cockney area of East London or in an Arab souk.

So, I don’t know the solution or even how to get there — thank goodness I ain’t a politician!
