Germany will shut down its three remaining nuclear plants on Saturday, betting that it can fulfil its green ambitions without atomic power despite the energy crisis caused by the Ukraine war.
The cloud of white steam that has risen since 1989 over the river in Neckarwestheim, near Stuttgart, will soon be a distant memory, as will the Isar 2 complex in Bavaria and the Emsland plant in the north.
At a time when many Western countries are ramping up nuclear power in their transition to greener energy sources, Europe’s biggest economy is resolutely sticking to its plans — though not everyone is in agreement.
Germany has been looking to phase out nuclear power since 2002, but the decision was accelerated by former chancellor Angela Merkel in 2011 after the Fukushima disaster in Japan.
Fukushima showed that “even in a high-tech country like Japan, the risks of nuclear energy cannot be safely controlled”, Merkel said at the time.
The exit decision was popular in a country with a powerful anti-nuclear movement fuelled by fears of Cold War conflict and disasters such as Chernobyl.

“I think about the terrible governments they put in place (or tolerated) during the two world wars.”
As opposed to the paragons we’ve had...LBJ, Clinton, Obama, Brandon etc.
What could possibly go wrong?
Some errors cannot be undone,
lunitics coupled to insanity = climate freaks
Fukushima disaster
__________
Guess how many people were killed in Fukushima atomic disaster?
ZERO!!!
Clearly the Germans haven’t suffered enough yet. They need more pain before they learn to stop sacrificing to Gaia.
They will surely get that pain. Its not going to be warm every winter. They can’t go on paying vastly more for Gas than they had been paying.
Because my family is at least partly German and I grew up with the language and lived there twice I can tell you, the Germans though often quite intelligent individually, have always been infected with a streak of idealism. This makes them very vulnerable to getting swept along by various crackpots be they Christian fanatics like in the middle ages, national socialists like in the mid 20th century or like Gaia Worshipers now.
When they’re in the grip of one of these cults they can be extremely destructive - self destructive this time. When they’re in full fever, they can’t be reasoned with. For example “hey you’re only X small % of all the world’s carbon emissions right now. Even if you slashed your emissions it wouldn’t really matter given how much more China, India and the rest of the 3rd world are increasing their carbon emissions. So why commit economic suicide for this - even if you accept the extreme claims about imminent catastrophe? They will just fall back on their dogma. “its for the earth” or Its the *right* thing to do”. etc
That’s how a nation of often very intelligent and well educated individuals can be such a disaster collectively.
They have their vassal state France for that.
Fukushima was hit by huge natural disaster. An earthquake of the 9 level. A lot of people were killed by the earthquake and tsunami.
Massive damage was done to the infrastructure in the area, including the damage to the power plant.
Yet, despite all the drama, nobody died as a result of radioactivity or of nuclear explosion.
Few people died because they were scared to death by media!
Radioactivity is surprisingly safe overall.
They calculated, that the Hiroshima explosion caused about 300 additional deaths from the radioactive exposure.
Everybody else got burned or evaporated by the heath or killed by the pressure wave!
More people died falling from roofs to their death installing solar cells than the ones died from from the radioactivity!
Yes. LOL! If you criticize the Beamter (Bureaucrats) this just does not compute with them.
If you criticize the Elites - other than for being Capitalists - this doesn’t compute either. They really do think those in positions of authority are looking out for them. All you can do is shake your head at such naivette.
Also AMAZINGLY, they have taken every lesson they should have learned from the Nazi era and inverted it. They trust the government but not the people. That’s why referendums are bad, guns in private hands are bad, basically any check on government power is bad. Bureaucrats “know best” because they are “experts” and therefore can be trusted.
They are well suited to be engineers. Ordnung Muss Sein! As we’ve seen with Big Tech in the US, engineers unfortunately tend to be authoritarians at heart.
And yes they just did not get it when I questioned why relying so heavily on Russia for their energy was in any way risky. They also did not get whey they shouldn’t seek to maximize profit by trading with Iran, Saddam, Cuba, etc. For people who are often so moralistic and preachy they sure are ruthlessly mercantilist abroad.
“the Germans though often quite intelligent individually, have always been infected with a streak of idealism.”
Interesting. Did the average German back in the 30’s and 40’s believe Jews were bad for Germany? Did Hitler to any extent reflect a culture-wide leaning?
PS. I LOVED LOVED LOVED mentioning all those German Americans.....like Rumsfeld and Trump!
You could just see the looks of indigestion on their faces whenever I mentioned them. :^)
Just an observation - German stupidity parallels California stupidity quite nicely on this power issue.
Another observation - Whatever the Germans do you should consider doing the opposite. This also applies to democrats.
Antisemitism was pretty common everywhere back in the 1930s. It was certainly present in Germany before Hitler came along though if anything, less so than in most other countries. There are historical reasons for that which are particular to Germany. Their Jews were extremely well integrated and many thought of themselves as Germans first. Germany had not been unified after the Treaty of Mainz in 1250 when the minor nobility gained ascendancy over the Holy Roman Empire. Local rulers were more antisemitic for the same reason$ as other rulers. The Holy Roman Emperors thus often chose Jews to be administrators (because they had no loyalty to this or that minor prince) and the Holy Roman Emperors tended to protect Jews more. German Jews thus tended to be more nationalist than in other countries....especially ones that centralized like England, France and Spain.
Remember that Hitler was an AUSTRIAN. Austrians were far more anti semitic than Germans.
I'm sure Germans overwhelmingly agreed though that Versailles was unfair. Felt they had been screwed over (which they had). Felt they should have a place as a great power again and felt that they were superior to everybody else....then again who didn't feel that way in the 30s? So I don't think it was the antisemitism that sold especially well with most Germans. It was all the other things the Nazis pushed - including the socialism.
The Krauts can always buy electricity from French nuke plants...
lol - yeah...they really do not understand real freedom imo, yet think they know America, as I’ve heard more than once, “we all know what America is all about.....we’ve all seen their MOVIES!”. SMH!!
That’s the thing that gets me more than any other. They think they know my own country better than I do despite their entire experience having been that they spent a week in Disneyworld and visited one or two of NY, San Francisco, Miami, LA. They actually think Hollywood reflects reality. Its amazing.
I had some of them tell me that the 2000 election was stolen and their “proof” was that Bush’s brother was the governor of Florida. Seriously. That’s it.
Americans’ are more ignorant of a lot of other countries than most Europeans are. Their saving grace is that they openly admit it. The Europeans by contrast think they just know it all.....also it simply does not dawn on them that the rest of the world might not want to be just like them. They’re as bad as our own Neocons in that way.
Betting that it can fulfil its green ambitions.
Purple sheets mailed to all the citizens.
“Antisemitism was pretty common everywhere back in the 1930s.”
The Jews do indeed have a complicated history.
