What Happens If DeSantis Takes a Pass on 2024? (are they getting nervous?)
New York Intelligencer ^ | 4/9/23 | Ed Kilgore

Posted on 04/10/2023 5:32:16 AM PDT by cotton1706

Trump wins a coronation. The alternative scenario for a 2024 without Ron was nicely articulated in late March by the Bulwark’s Jonathan V. Last:

The next thing that happens is Trump pops higher in both national and early-state polls. That’s because Trump is the second choice of about half of the voters who support DeSantis. Which means that you’d expect Trump to almost immediately add >10 points to his poll numbers, putting him close to the 60 percent mark nationally …

The Republican establishment, which has been pushing DeSantis relentlessly for two years, would freak the eff out.

Last figures that, after casting about wildly for another champion, Establishment Republicans would soon resign themselves to another Trump nomination since “conservative and Republican elites would believe that this really was the last time they’d have to bend over for Trump”:

They would assume that he can’t win and that the actuarial charts will prevent a 2028 Trump campaign. They’d tell themselves that January 7, 2025 will be the first day of the rest of their lives and all they have to do is gut out the Trumpism for a few more months.

Elites aside, a Trump candidacy without a formidable opponent like DeSantis might fall somewhere between his 2016 campaign, when he steadily gained strength against divided opposition, and his unopposed 2020 candidacy as an incumbent. Yes, the expectations game might work against Trump in this scenario, but it’s not as if he couldn’t make a comeback. His entire 2024 candidacy represents a comeback from two impeachments, a general-election defeat, a failed insurrection, and whatever prosecutors can pin on him between now and the end of the 2024 election cycle.

Ron DeSantis won’t be running in the general election and very doubtful the primary. Its just not part of the plan. Sorry.

It would show he’s not as stupid as I am beginning to suspect.

The only way to fully recover would be to then fully and unconditionally throw his support to Trump.

Maybe

"They'll once again be faced with the inevitable choice: get on board with Trump or join the Democrats"

They did the latter in 2020 imho by a lukewarm support to fraud concerns (and tacit support of the Fed antics on Jan 6), and in 2022 when a bunch of MAGA candidates were in the mix (example: McConnell sabotaging Tshibaka by support for Murkowski).

Two years out, anything can happen. I’ve been very supportive of the theory that DeSantis will not run, I personally think if he does run he’s letting Florida down which is a shame.

This past week is led me to believe that my assumptions may have been askew.

We will see. No matter who comes out of the primary, and if it really matters to everyone if there is a republican in the presidency, personal pet peeves or personal butt hurt aside it’s has to be all hands on deck voting day. And we have to vote in a unified fashion.

There’s just no other way it’s going to happen. That is the reality of the situation.

Otherwise I’m going to spend my last few remaining years really not giving a s*** what happens to this country because the people who could have saved this country would have laid down and gave ‘way for the political slaughter of this, our Constitutional Republic, over pettiness.

I also agree that DeSantis is the stronger general election candidate.

Trump have his redemption (re)election

***********

JMO but Trump’s time has passed.

Biden will be 81 at the time of the next presidential
election and turn 82 shortly after it. Trump is currently
76 and will be 78 by the time of the next election.

The youngest to become president by election was John F.
Kennedy, who was inaugurated at age 43. The oldest person
to assume the presidency was Joe Biden, the nation’s current
president, who was inaugurated at age 78.

No, Trump needs to face a lot of voters and be in lots of debates before the General Election. Otherwise he’ll lose big. It would be like trying to compete in the World Series after missing the regular season and playoffs if he doesn’t face a serious contest in the GOP race.

I’m predicting Harris will be the president before it’s all over. But then again HRC still had a pulse and an air exchange.

Maybe it is stem cell treatments keeping these old crooks alive.

Trump is 76. Reagan was 77 at the end of his second term. Biden is 80 and can’t manage anything beyond an occasional wan wave. No way Trump will win imo, because his opponent won’t be Biden.

I don’t see DeSantis winning the general. There’s a large number of MAGA voters that will sit out if Trump is not in the picture. Just my humble opinion from what I’ve read over the last year.

My theory is that Biden will be reelected in an effort
have the 1st female President. Biden is elected and
steps down after two years and one day. That way VP
Harris would become President and could be elected for
two full terms afterwards. History in the making. JMO

The likely prospect of a POTUS Kamala wil be a huge vote-loser if 80 yo Biden runs again.

One of the means to get ready is to run lightly, gather contacts and money, lose, build using those contacts and money, then be ready next time.
