Trump’s response to criminal charges revives election lies

NEW YORK (AP) — Legally, the most important words former President Donald Trump said after he was charged with 34 felonies by the Manhattan District Attorney last week were “not guilty.” But, politically, the most significant may be “election interference.”

Trump’s repetition of those words, which have been taken up by other top Republicans, show how he is trying to turn his historic position as the first former president charged with crimes to his advantage. It’s another example of what’s been a consistent refrain throughout his political career — claiming without evidence that an election is being rigged against him.

After his initial court appearance in the New York case, the first of several in which he is in legal jeopardy, Trump ticked through the varied investigations he was facing and branded them as “massive” attempts to interfere with the 2024 election.

“Our justice system has become lawless,” Trump said as he appeared before supporters as his Florida home, Mar-a-Lago. “They’re using it now, in addition to everything else, to win elections.”

In 2020, Trump began arguing the election would be fraudulent months before voting started. He attacked efforts to loosen restrictions on mail voting during the coronavirus pandemic, and expanded those allegations after losing the election to claim he’d actually won it. Those lies led to the Jan. 6, 2021, assault on the U.S. Capitol.

Federal and state election officials and Trump’s own attorney general have said there is no credible evidence the 2020 election was tainted. The former president’s allegations of fraud were also roundly rejected by courts, including by judges Trump appointed.

Trump is behaving like a politician in the legal crosshairs, said Steven Levitsky, a Harvard political scientist.

“He’s certainly not the first politician to be prosecuted to play the political victim card,” Levitsky said.

If America is ripe for stolen elections,
then what good is so-called democracy, anyway.

_____________________________________________________

Exactly! If elections are effectively rigged (even if they are heavily legally within the present system), then why have a wet dream over “democracy”. The retort might be Churchill’s response that “Democracy is the worst form of government except for everything else that’s been tried”. but is it? Really? If you get only 10% of the things you want under democracy, but get 90 % of the things you want under a Constitutional Monarchy, is democracy really better? Can anyone argue with a straight face that the present system of a few major metropolitan areas ruling the politics of the whole nation is really the best we can do?

Yah, there was ample of evidence that 2020 was totally corrupt. But, since the GOP never took action, nothingwill change.

It was only after seeing the phrase “without evidence” that I glanced up to see where the article came from. Sure enough, it was AP, but it could just as well have been any other “main stream” propaganda fountain.

“claiming without evidence”
Except the Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled that ballot drop boxes were illegal, but they were used widely in 2020 in Wisconsin for the first time. Trump lost IMHO but that does not mean the Dems did not cheat in a number of ways.

Does anyone really care what the AP says? They’ve been liberals since the Vietnam War.

Alvin Bragg Has Opened Pandora’s Box
https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2023/04/alvin_bragg_has_opened_pandoras_box.html

District Attorney Bragg charged President Trump

with 34 stacked misdemeanor charges of business document errors,
which are past their statute of limitations,
and are bumped up to felony violations,
with the claim they were done to hide a felony,
which is still hidden because Bragg is keeping it a secret from the court and the defendant.

That’s apparently how it’s done in New York.

Is Alvin Bragg so much of an amateur that he didn’t realize that a charging document has to actually charge a crime? Does he think he can arrest and book a citizen without telling him what crime he’s accused of — like what they used to do in the good old USSR?

But Bragg didn’t stop there. He also asked the judge to set a trial date for January 2024 — letting the defense know that they have eight months to prepare a defense for a crime he hasn’t disclosed. It’s only a coincidence that January of next year is when the presidential primary season will be spooling up. I’m amazed that Bragg thinks he can get away with such sloppy work, given the scrutiny he’s under.
