I lived in Rincon Hill for a year in 2007/2008 - my last year in the Bay Area after a lifetime living there - and it was already a place where you didn't wander around late. The practice of leaving car doors unlocked when parking on the street to avoid having windows smashed was already well-established. Nevertheless, there were young white professionals with small children living in my building.

I don't know what the draw was other than being able to walk to work - which was still a daily jungle adventure for me at 4:30 am. The vaunted bar and restaurant scene was better twenty miles east in Walnut Creek.
