Ron DeSantis on Trump: I can't speak to porn star payments
BBC News ^ | March 20 | By Anthony Zurcher

Posted on 03/20/2023 11:18:48 AM PDT by RandFan

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, when asked about rumours of former President Donald Trump's impending indictment, denounced the man in charge of the investigation, New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg.

What the man who might be Mr Trump's most formidable presidential rival said next, however, was telling.

"I don't know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star to secure silence over some type of alleged affair," he said. "I just I can't speak to that."

He went on to mention "porn star hush money payments" a second time, before pivoting back to criticism of what he called a "high-profile politicised prosecution" by a prosecutor he said was backed by deep-pocketed liberal donor George Soros.

The Florida governor seemed to go out of way to emphasise the tawdry origins of the potential crimes being investigated, even while denouncing the investigation itself.

That could be a sign of how Mr Trump's presidential rivals handle a possible arrest and criminal trial for falsifying business records and state campaign finance law violations.

Mr DeSantis had been under pressure from Trump supporters to defend the former president and denounce the prosecution ever since the Mr Trump speculated on his social media website that he would be arrested on Tuesday.

That’s right, Trump and his surrogates have been constantly attacking DeSantis sometimes in very underhanded and dirty ways.

Now, Trump is the one in potential trouble and his supporters want every Republican to drop everything and give 100% support, if Trump and his supporters want 100% support in this matter it might help if Trump and his supporters were not engaged in a dirty underhanded campaign against DeSantis.

Let’s not forget that Trump is 100% responsible for this mess, if he had been faithful to his wife, none of this would be happening.

After all the snarky childish remarks Trump has made about DeSantis to date what do you expect DeSantis to say?

Consider this, if the roles we’re reversed what do you think Trump would be saying right now?......I’m sure it wouldn’t be glowing praise.

“ I’m not happy with this. Doesn’t appear very helpful does it? ”

He correctly catagorized an out of control DA conducting a political operation against a ex-President .
It’s not his job to go into detail about the “case”.
He said what should be said.

“Trump calls him “DeSanctimonious” ‘

Not for nothing, judging by his sanctimonious comments

Fits the definition: making a show of being morally superior to other people.

Trump has been nothing but hateful towards DeSantis. Ron’s giving his personal opinion in a much more gracious way than DJT would have if the roles were reversed.

What he have made those comments if Trump didn’t start attacking him so early? I say no.

He (DeSantis) is in a tough spot.

Best call would be to non comitial, say it will be reviewed IF an indictment and request for extradition is filed, and let it lay. Makes everyone annoyed, but will buy time and let him get things in play.

Cheap comments while worth a chuckle, do little to advance his brand and much to burn bridges.

A strategic mistake.

I was thinking the same thing. What’s the difference, other than Clinton’s a Democrat plus you can hardly blame him given what he has to wake up next to in the morning.

Correct, and a great example of why personal morals DO have an impact on how you lead.

"I have no interest in getting involved in some type of manufactured circus by some Soros DA," DeSantis said.

Great response..seems the press wants to start a fight.

Maybe Trump shouldn’t have said horrible things about him over the past several months.

People around here criticize the “unforced errors” by Trump, and for valid reasons, since he does make them, but it is part of the whole package. Many of us accept that outright.

DeSantis made an “unforced error”. He didn’t need to, especially since his whole advantage is supposedly that he is more “mature” and less mercurial.

If he had said anything such as “I don’t support this type of political prosecution. If he has committed a crime, let him defend it or drop it, and I would prefer they drop it since it does seem political. That’s all I have to say about that.”

I would have liked that.

But I think DeSantis is more of the same of what we have in our government. He is a politician. And he acted like a petty one there, when he could have kept above the fray.

Don’t get me wrong-that is one of the reasons many people like me LOVED Trump as President-he wasn’t afraid to jump in with both feet, for better or worse. Because his absolute disdain for taking “the higher road” with people attacking him showed us that he wasn’t a Washington politician in that mold.

One of the things I HATED about Bush was his reluctance to defend himself. That was never an issue with Trump.

But DeSantis showed he isn’t much different from nearly every other Republican in Congress. He is just less known, and the lightning is still landing on President Trump, not him. If he gets the nomination, that will change.

“ It's not about the so-called crime at all, but the outrageous political use of the justice system that spells grave danger to all of us.”

Yes, you are absolutely correct. I am very disappointed that DeSantis chose the “cheap political” tack.
