San Francisco Bay Area Bans Gas Furnaces and Water Heaters

Regulators in the San Francisco Bay Area voted Wednesday to eliminate the sale and installation of natural gas-powered furnaces and water heaters over eight years beginning in 2027, ostensibly to limit air pollution.

The vote was the latest step taken by left-wing jurisdictions against natural gas — a convenient and relatively clean-burning source of fuel.

The San Francisco Chronicle reported (original links):

Bay Area regulators voted Wednesday to adopt rules to phase out the sale and installation of natural-gas furnaces and water heaters over the next eight years, one of the most ambitious plans in the country to replace gas appliances with electric alternatives.

The rules, approved by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, are meant to reduce air pollution from some of the worst home-appliance offenders. The main pollutants targeted are nitrogen oxides, or NOx, which can cause acid rain and smog as well as increase risk for asthma and other respiratory diseases.

People will be able to repair their gas appliances if they break — but the rules take effect when existing gas-powered furnaces or water heaters no longer work and need to be replaced. New construction will also be required to have zero-NOx — effectively, electric — furnaces and water heaters.

Every single day I wake up with more reasons to HATE our state and federal governments.

That sentiment is growing nationwide with every passing day, FRiend.

What do your neighbors say? How do they explain still voting for these idiots?

I remember when I was working in the Sacramento area for about six months in 2007 there were a lot of non-liberal Republicans that I met. I also had relatives and friends in the Bay Area that were not leftists but boy the general population is really bought into this whole psychotic thinking.

This sounds one of those “sustainability” initiatives from the folks who live on an earthquake fault.

I,lived in Nevada County-—in the “Gold Country” foothills on the western side of the Sierra Nevada.

The ONLY pollution WE had was blown there from San Fran.

The prevailing winds move all the ‘pollution’ out of SF.

They’re going to a system of electric coils powered by windmills. What more could you ask for?

I recall when we switched out our coal furnace for gas circa 1955. No more lugging coal across the cellar floor to stoke the burner. Worked wonderfully. Never considered that some day some dingbat politicians would ban gas fired furnaces.

I’m picturing the giant flames under the big woks behind the counter at The Hunan in Chinatown being shut down forever. Good luck “firing” a wok with electric heating elements. Sad watching the most interesting and beautiful city in America commit suicide. No coincidence that it started after the closet doors were let open, occupants released, and never shut back up. Poison whatever they touch.

San Francisco will be the most un-diverse city soon, with only super rich and homeless.

Ha.... That Lenox is a piker...I have an original space heater that came with the house from back in 1950.

Also has the original thermostat with some silvery liquid in a little glass tube.

It looks a bit like one of those antique thermometers seen today in museums and films about Florence Nightingale.

GOOD, this means more Natural gas and Propane for all the sane people in the country.

When there is a surplus of NG again in a few years it will be so cheap that all the Electric Utilities will switch back to burning NG to make electricity anyway and Eversource will drop their rates again.

when the gas company ran a line down the street in from of our home a few years ago, we signed up and with a gas furnace, gas tank-less hot water heater and gas range, we more than halved our total household expenses.

No, all the outdoor grills will run from Lithium batteries.

You will not be allowed to “kindle a fire”. No combustion of any kind. Unless, you are a special person. Some people are more equal than others.

Gas was the only thing working the past two days. Half the west valley is still without power.

CA liberals can’t exist without forcing people to obey their bs

Natural gas doesn’t cause acid rain. It’s the sulfur in other fuels particularly coal that cause acid rain.

The use of natural gas does not contribute significantly to smog formation, as it emits low levels of nitrogen oxides, and virtually no particulate matter

Volcanos make acid rain big time.

What they don’t talk about is how particulate in the air aids in the formation of all rain. A lack of sand storms in the Sahara can and have caused drought in India.

Particulate matter has a lot to do with our existence. A sharp geologist I know talks about how the earth was just a big rock and until various forms of erosion occurred and made, what he calls, rock flour, did we have soil for anything to grow.

This would matter if all of this were about the environment and climate, which of course, it is not.

Its a WEF thing. They hope to outlaw natural gas appliances and use, and best case (to them) before 2030. Worst case to them is 2035. There is a WEF affiliated organization pushing their ideology to large cities all over the world, its called C40. Their website is c40.org, check it out. Pretty much every blue city in the US is a member.
