Trump allies say DeSantis running illegal ‘shadow campaign’ for president

President Donald Trump took his attacks on Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis to a new level Wednesday, as a super PAC linked to the 76-year-old accused his would-be rival of ethics violations tied to what it calls DeSantis’ “shadow presidential campaign.”

A draft of the 15-page letter by Make America Great Again Inc. calls on the Florida Commission on Ethics to investigate DeSantis, alleging that the 44-year-old has violated a slew of state statutes as well as federal campaign finance laws.

The complaint refers to DeSantis as a “de facto candidate for president” and claims that the governor is “leveraging his elected office and breaching his associated duties in a coordinated effort to develop his national profile, enrich himself and his political allies, and influence the national electorate.”

“Governor DeSantis’ failure to declare his candidacy is no mere oversight,” the complaint alleged. “[I]t is a coordinated effort to specifically designed for him to accept, as unethical gifts, illegal campaign contributions and certain personal benefits that are necessarily intended to influence his official decision to resign from office under Florida’s resign to run law.

“Governor DeSantis’ ham-handed maneuverings,” the complaint added, “have rendered him irreparably conflicted and have left the statehouse vacant.”

The letter includes as evidence that DeSantis has “abused his office and abdicated his official duties in favor of pursuing his national political interests” the fact that the governor has “met with influential figures in early primary states,” “is vetting operatives in early primary states,” and “met with individuals who are likely to play key roles in his presidential campaign.”

The letter asks that the commission impose one or more penalties including impeachment, removal from office, public censure, ballot disqualification and fines.

Exactly.

This mad obsession with Ron is making DJT look more and more like King Lear...an old guy going off his rocker.

He’s not going to resign as Governor. What if he lost the Presidential election? His career would be over. At 46.. He needs the legislature to help him. If I was voting, I’d make him stay and do the job he was already committed to.

“He’s not going to resign as Governor.”

While you may be confident in your ability to predict the future, I do not share your confidence. So I shall wait and see, and decide whether to condemn him or not for what he actually decides to do, rather than what you or I might suspect he may do in the future.

Trump is at 46% against someone who isn’t even running.

I too like Desantis and understand your reasoning. But instead of liking what he says, I'm a big fan of what he's been doing thus the old saying: actions speak louder than words.

With that said, I really hope he doesn't announce. Frankly, I don't want to hear the battle between Trump and him. I don't want to hear Trump's cutting except at democrats and rinos. I'm sick of his current attacks and have lost a lot of respect for him because of that but I have no doubt, that Trump is the only one that can actually tackle the sewer that is D.C. so I put those attacks aside.

That law applies to state employees, not elected officials. Until Desantis declares as a candidate for another office, he is not obligated to relinquish his current office under the current law. He can legally explore the possibility of a run for president but if he files paperwork to run, under the current law he must then resign his current office. So regardless of what many here are claiming, Desantis is currently not in violation of any law.

Yeah, but the spirit of the law is being violated. The purpose of the law is to prevent what DeSantis is now doing.

Or
Captain Ahab .
Trump is devolving into the most immature petty bitter envious Unpresidential cartoon with a bad rug ever seen in American politics .
He is just keeps spouting off embarrassing cringe worthy childish gibberish .
Trump needs to understand the goal is to defeat Biden and the left
not shatter and destroy the Gop party for a generation in his desperation. .

I appreciate the clear and articulate read of the law you're providing, but you're missing the forest for the trees.

Campaign finance law is complicated and open to at least some interpretation. President Trump isn't literally trying to disqualify DeSanctis - that won't happen. Just get the lawsuit out there, announce some kind of investigation, and let President Trump handle the rest.

As one of the most successful Television Personalities ever, President Trump understands the power of perception when it comes to crushing his adversaries.

Ron seems like an alright guy, but he's going to get destroyed.

As I read that statute, Desantis would not have to resign unless he became the nominee, and would have to submit his resignation at least 10 days before accepting the nomination at the national convention. He would not have “qualified” for the office until he officially receives the party nomination or files to run as an independent. Even in that case, he could continue to serve as governor right up to Inauguration Day if he made that the effective date of the resignation.

Courts do not deal with spirit of the law unless the intent is so muddied by poor wording they have to step in and decide which reading is correct. The statute as written is not muddied at all. Especially since statute also provides definition of and procedure for qualifying as a candidate.

Trump whines like a middle school girl.

The country elected someone who was an Indonesian citizen…do you think anyone is going care about a shadow campaign…just like the campaign just about every candidate has run for 150 years?

Grow up and campaign on issues. People don’t like “leaders” who whine about how they’ve been slighted.

They fear Trump and Ron.
By doing this, they damage both candidates.

I believe he did:

Nowhere in this statement, made over a year before his landslide re-election, does DeSantis state that he will not run if Trump runs.

In the final analysis, if Trumps offends enough of the voters including DeSantis voters, he absolutely get drubbed in the general and go down in history as a crash and burn candidate.

Nice legacy......

Getting millions more in his second run means he was more popular..

And every day the installed Biden is around, MAGA voters are going to remember how it was before the election steal..

The R party is living its Bush-Clinton-Bush-Obama era best life again..

It’s what caused Trump to run in the first place..
