Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida has sharply broken with Republicans who are determined to defend Ukraine against Russia’s invasion, saying in a statement made public on Monday night that protecting the European nation’s borders is not a vital U.S. interest and that policymakers should instead focus attention at home.
###
“While the U.S. has many vital national interests — securing our borders, addressing the crisis of readiness with our military, achieving energy security and independence, and checking the economic, cultural and military power of the Chinese Communist Party — becoming further entangled in a territorial dispute between Ukraine and Russia is not one of them,” Mr. DeSantis said in a statement that Mr. Carlson read aloud on his show.
###
“F-16s and long-range missiles should therefore be off the table,” he added. “These moves would risk explicitly drawing the United States into the conflict and drawing us closer to a hot war between the world’s two largest nuclear powers. That risk is unacceptable.”
“A policy of ‘regime change’ in Russia (no doubt popular among the D.C. foreign policy interventionists) ,” Mr. DeSantis said, “would greatly increase the stakes of the conflict, making the use of nuclear weapons more likely.
Mr. DeSantis added, “We cannot prioritize intervention in an escalating foreign war over the defense of our own homeland, especially as tens of thousands of Americans are dying every year from narcotics smuggled across our open border and our weapons arsenals critical for our own security are rapidly being depleted.”

With Trump as the VP.
What, Trump's ego is too big for that, and he's more likely to run as third party spoiler if he doesn't win the nomination, than be second fiddle to DeSantis for the good of the country, you think?
Of course he is, many of his supporters will tell you the same thing, I just linked some above. Which is another reason he doesn't deserve to be President again. He's too much about himself, and not enough about what's good for the country. That's not vitriol, that's cold hard truth if it's stinging.
I read from Freepers that DeSantis is the biggest neocon of all time?
No problem, I’m out, talking to Trump supporters is like talking to a wall (that was never built). Good night.
At the same time, it’s essentially Biden’s position too.
“Trump is just defining the little ingrate”
So you are saying that because Trump supported DeSantis in the first election in Florida, DeSantis is not allowed to run because that makes him “disloyal”.
I wasn’t talking to you.
I believe if you’re a conservative, you should vote for the Republican nominee in the general election, verses sitting out, or voting for someone else.
***********
Thank you for clarifying that you’ll support the Republican nominee in the 2024 General Election.
I’ll also assume W Bush, McCain, Kasich, Jeb Bush, Romney, Sasse, etc, were bad Republicans in 2016 from your “team perspective.”
Well thanks, NYT. Coincidentally, that’s just what MAGA wants to hear about DeSantis. The NYT has taken quite an interest in DeSantis and has been doing a lot of PR for him lately. The NYT just has ours and DeSantis best interest at heart, I’m sure.
Why would the NYT do this? Seems like trumpeting Ron’s move away from the Deep State just drives Trump and DeSantis supporters together. Just trying to figure out their nefarious motives.
So you are saying that because Trump supported DeSantis in the first election in Florida, DeSantis is not allowed to run because that makes him “disloyal”.
*******””
DeSantis can “bail on Florida” and do whatever he wants.
I won’t be voting for him, not because of his disloyalty to the 45th President, my reasons are different.
I don’t know anything about the guy and am sick of the hype around him.
Furthermore, I don’t like the way DeSantis supporters have been conducting themselves on Free Republic.
That was the one issue that had me on the fence. I was worried about the
establishment guys potentially surrounding him but he is keeping them at bay. I agree with DeSantis on the vax and to top it off, he is disciplined unlike Trump.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. Bravo Governor.
I think it’s hilarious that anyone thinks voting will fix anything. Hilarious, but also really sad. Nobody seems to realize what’s at stake.
Regarding Covid, the worst thing that happened was Trump allowing Fauci to distract from the very clear explanation in Dr. Vladimir Zelenko’s 3 part treatment for EARLY Covid. His 3/23/20 cc to the White House and Mark Meadows clearly made the point that zinc was the virus stopper/killer, that HCQ would let the zinc enter infected cells more easily, and that Azithromycin would protect lungs from bacterial infection. In only ten days both Fauci and President Trump were NOT mentioning the essential virus stopper ZINC. On or around May 11, 2020, Fauci announced NIH would do a study of hospitalized Covid patient using HCQ and Azithromycin. NO ZINC, NO EARLY PATIENTS. A design to fail. Then Fauci started promoting Remdesivir, a $3000 treatment (taxpayer subsidized) for hospitalized Covid patients who were already quite ill. The early 3 part treatment only required $20 in medication.
I think Trump finally figured out he had been hoodwinked. After his hospital trip for Covid ended, he was walking from the helicopter to the White House door. He was speaking about the drugs he had used like monoclonal antibodies, Remdesivir and others. Finally he muttered with an angry look on his face and said, “I used ZINC too.” After all, it didn’t really matter that 1/2 million US people died before vaccines were available so long as BIG MEDICINE got its payoffs for Remdesivir, other new drugs, and vaccines (also taxpayer subsidized./s
I am not clear at this point what Trump’s opinion is regarding helping Ukraine resist conquest or theft of the areas of land the best supplied with oil, gas, coal and other important natural assets. I was pleased with Trumps resistance to China and bringing manufacturing home. However I cannot see how any observant politician does not realize Russian victory in Ukraine will probably lead to Chinese attack on Taiwan. Our defense of Taiwan will cost a lot more than we are spending on Ukraine’s defense. I saw a poll that reported only 9% of US people have a favorable opinion of Russia. This reportedly ranks below cancer and cockroaches.
I should have pinged you for my comment #95 because of your interest in the Covid issue, although this thread is more about Ukraine and whether it should be supported.
That statement is good. But until today, I saw no indications that RDS was opposed to what we are doing in Ukraine.
Some old Trump supporters are pouring money to DeSantis...who else is there?
No, we have given a 12-digit amount of dollars to Ukraine.
Over $135,000,000,000. That’s 135 Billion.
Trump increased his vote total by 12 million in 2020. And, his record on the economy and everything else is far better than Biden's.
No former President or Presidential candidate has the following Trump does and the ability to pack arenas like Trump. And, certainly not DeSantis, who has the personality of a potted plant.
Do I need to go on?
