A recent college graduate in Utah was shot several times by police during a traffic stop in early March after officers allegedly saw him reaching for a gun, body camera video shows.
Farmington, Utah, police department officers stopped 25-year-old Chase Allan after seeing an illegitimate license plate on the BMW car he was driving at 3:22 p.m. on March 1. Police Chief Eric Johnsen released body camera video relating to the incident on Wednesday.
When the police officer told Allan that he was being stopped because there was no registration on the car, Allan said, "I don't need registration and I don't answer questions." The officer requested backup, and four other officers arrived at the scene.

Idiotic Sovereign Citizen smacktalk has consequences. Here’s a tip to such fools: Be polite and respectful to the cops. Comply with their instructions. Record the interaction if you wish, and then, if you take exception, sue them. Don’t bring a spurious legal argument to a gunfight that your failure to comply provoked.

What was the problem is that the guy seemed to think that laws didn't apply to him, starting with the fake license plate that likely indicated to the responding officer that this guy was going to be trouble.
The law is really clear that if you are operating a motor vehicle on a public street, you have to provide identification and the car must be registered.
Arguing with the cops about those most basic facts is rarely going to end well. On top of that, reaching for a clearly visible gun, without telling the police what you're doing can be fatal. As it was in this case.

Common practice to call for backup with an uncooperative or non-compliant person. It is unknown if the person will escalate the situation or want to fight. Better safe than sorry.
