I love my solar panels. They work great when decentralized (I manage them for my family's benefit, not for the overly regulated grid). But solar as a grid power source is horrible engineering.

I don't even have to flip a switch. My inverters are already powering my home from the panels or batteries anyway (assuming I've had sunny weather recently). So when the few times the grid goes down I wouldn't know it if my inverters' app didn't notify me. Here in Alabama usually the grid is back up before I ask my wife to hold off on running unnecessary appliances to preserve power (i.e. hold off on getting in the hot tub, or washing and drying clothes until the sun comes up tomorrow morning).
