Michigan’s new Democratic majority in the state Legislature has a climate and energy-related wish list. No need to check it twice.
Legislative leaders said Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s climate action plan is a blueprint for the next two years. That means renewable energy initiatives, electric vehicle programs, a faster end to burning coal for energy, home improvement and weatherization investment, and energy affordability measures.
It may become policy Christmas for climate action advocates and renewable energy proponents. But the holiday was pushed back for bad weather.
Mother Nature spoke loudly the last two weeks and lawmakers are adjusting their timetables after multiple ice storms and long power outages spotlighted serious unresolved issues with grid reliability.
“The ice storm has obviously supercharged the conversation in terms of especially energy provision and utility regulation in Michigan,” said state Sen. Sean McCann, D-Kalamazoo, chairperson of the Michigan Senate’s Energy and Environment Committee.
He said officials are currently sorting out final details for hearings in his committee to explore options to strengthen the grid. The goal is to make it less susceptible to collapse under bad weather – conditions scientists say will only accelerate in strength and frequency because of climate change.
“There has been progress on grid hardening but clearly not enough. How we get there and still have power be affordable and reliable is a big factor,” McCann said.
Back-to-back ice storms the last two weeks during a time of year when snowstorms are historically more common are the latest climate-related catastrophes to hit Michigan’s power grid. It’s just that this time it happened in the winter, leaving many without both power and heat when they need it most.

If global warming causes blizzards ... you might be a Democrat. LOL
If the best way to make the grid more reliable is to remove reliable energy sources and replace them with unreliable “green” energy ... you might be a Democrat. LOL
If the grid being down makes you support even more forcing people to drive EV’s ... you might be a Democrat. LOL
the city of KALAMAZOO is declaring March to be CLIMATE EMERGENCY MONTH!!! LMFAO
Every event is a Crisis.
Every Crisis demands a Centralized Immediate Totalitarian Solution.
Very person must afford the Enlightened Class the Cares the Authority to Mandate that ?Solution because they Care.
Snow and ice in Michigan in the winter time?
Who could have imagined such a thing happening?
LOL. And this winter has been a very mild and warm winter.
What if they faced a truly historical cold winter?
"home improvement and weatherization investment"
We've been hearing that same old crapola for at least FIFTY years. Every building in America should have been insulated and weatherized at least three times by now.
"energy affordability measures"
In other words, tax credits, tax credits and more tax credits. Those Dem bastards will do anything but increase the energy supply. You get your tax credit today and all of us get inflation from here to eternity.
Any politician who claims that THEY can change the weather is a con artist and should be thrown in prison for the safety of others.
Solar panels for all!!
Could it be because the state is spending its energy infrastructure money on BS "Green Energy" projects instead of things that actually will help the Michigan power grid, like grid hardening?
I tell you, nothing gets by authoress Sheri. Snowstorms and ice storms are more common in winter. Whatever she is paid, she needs a big raise!
Did the big ice and snowstorms last time happen in summer?
I love my solar panels. They work great when decentralized (I manage them for my family's benefit, not for the overly regulated grid). But solar as a grid power source is horrible engineering.
Of course this story is about Michigan. I doubt home solar works half as good up there as it does here in Alabama.

What does the “newly elected” democrat majority in the statehouse care? You can be sure they get all the heat they want - gasoline too, subsidized by the state.
They are Communist Commissars, who don’t have to suffer from the policies they inflict on the rest of us “little people” - whom they scorn.
Hey Michigan: How about stop voting in these monsters? (unless there is mass vote fraud like there is in California - then THAT is what needs to be dealt with fist).

So glad I fled Michigan when I retired.
