Of course.

A derailment in Michigan a long time ago was covered by local news. A woman was interviewed saying the government agents came house to house and told people not to worry because the clouds of poisonous fumes they had seen earlier were under control and they could leave their houses again. They went around doing testing including soil samples.

The woman said she was inside looking at him through her screen door and the man telling her she was safe was wearing a full hazmat suit and mask. “I didn’t feel reassured.”

Great news. Passing through the area, and made reservations to spend the night at an area hotel.

I know its probably just incompetence or lack of maintenance or something more rational, but I can’t help but think it could be saboteurs from environmental whacko groups or possibly foreign agents taking revenge on a weak regime.

Poor maintenance is the main reason - I’m next to the tracks and several trains a day have wheels so out of round the ground shakes when they go by - that has to affect wheel bearings and such and also beats the crap out of the tracks and the base they rest on.
