A private company that wants to build a high-speed rail line from Southern California to Las Vegas took a step toward construction on Thurdsay with the announcement of a labor agreement for the proposed project.
Local ABC affiliate KABC-7 reported:
Brightline, the company that will build the system, has announced a landmark labor agreement with the High-Speed Rail Labor Coalition, which is “compromised of 13 rail unions representing more than 160,000 freight, regional, commuter, and passenger railroad workers in the United States.”
…
The $10 billion investment is expected to create nearly 35,000 jobs during construction and over 1,000 permanent jobs once operational, according to a press release from Brightline.
The fully-electric train will be able to travel 200 miles an hour.
The idea for a bullet train to Las Vegas has survived the ongoing failures of the public high-speed rail project between San Francisco and Los Angeles. That project, approved in principle by voters in a 2008 referendum, has ballooned in cost and has encountered numerous environmental objections. Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) canceled much of the project when he took office in 2019, keeping only a portion in the Central Valley that has yet to be built and which will only connect two remote towns where there is little passenger rail demand.

Someone gonna make some cash. Lots of it.
Well, if they make the tracks out of Reardon Metal, it could work out.
If a private company wants to deal with it all, good for them.
As long as taxpayers aren’t on the hook for it....
“This will be a complete boondoggle “
Drive I-15 on a weekend and get back with us. In this case, virtually everyone on i-15 is going to the same place, the Strip...so one of two end-point requirements are met. It has a chance.
“It has a chance.”
I agree 100%
This is the private company constructing the rail in Florida, right?
It seems like they have a partner in the Florida govt.
But CA and NV govts are a different animal..
“As long as taxpayers aren’t on the hook for it....”
Watch for it!!! You know they’ll find a way to get taxpayers to pay for it or a lot of it. “Public/Private Partnership” coming right up.
But what about the obligatory stop in Barstow??
it’ll be a ghost town...
I can’t wait for the CA legislature to push for completion of the SF to LA high-speed rail once the LA to LV spur is complete, since people will have a destination they want to go to.
Will there be bulletproof glass between every seat row? That’s the only way I’d even consider riding that train.
This will be one places high speed rail will probably work in America.
A. It is a point A to point B route.
B. It is a relatively flat and clear of obstacles
C. High rollers will flock to it.
D. It is a private company that will build and own it. It is the same company that operates a succesful train service in Florida.
We should be supporting this kind of infrastrure development.
America hasn't had private passenger rail in over 50 years. We have become like Soviet citizens living in 1988 eastern europe who can't comprehend anything except state-run, bloated awfulness, because we've never seen anything different our whole lives.
What is the current drive in a car Bob?
4-5 hours
I doubt any private equity firm would commit capital if they did not see it as a money maker.
This actually seems like it could be a money maker for the owner of the line. Especially it the termination of the line is close to the Strip. There are thousands of people that drive from LA to Vegas every weekend. Once there, you do not need a car.
Unlike building one of these high speed trains in other locations, this does not cross very populated areas once you get out of the metro area.
Will there be public transport to get you to its origin in the LA area? This is the issue whenever I have considered taking the Accella high speed train out of Boston. How do I get from southern NH to the South Boston train station. Here you have to take a bus to get there. In the metro area of Boston you can take the T to South Station and connect to the Acella there.
But what about the obligatory stop in Barstow??
it’ll be a ghost town...
The railroad built Barstow and now the railroad is going to kill Barstow.
* Barstow is named after William Barstow Strong, former president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.
Well, if they’re really private then good luck, but partnering with 13 unions doesn’t sound like a path to success.
Jesus Christ, for going on 7 decades I been drivin thru that craphole an somehow I managed to survive without knowing that!!!
Thanks anyways...not sure if ol’ Bill Strong would appreciate his namesake town now
Private money make sense...
Lots of small time gamblers might be willing to keep the rail line in business. Then again does Vegas really want small time gamblers filling their upscale casinos?
—”Someone gonna make some cash. Lots of it.”
And if they know the right people, they could purchase a large collection of NOS (new old stock) highspeed rail stuff from friends in California.
SUCH A DEAL!
That said, this may be the only proposed HS rail not terminating in a state capital???
People will finally be able to get the hell out of Cauliphonya a lot more quickly.
