VLADIMIR Putin’s allies have bizarrely threatened to use the Satan-2 nuclear missile to attack the Yellowstone supervolcano.
The attack - that could cause a radioactive eruption - was openly talked about on state-run TV and came as the Russian tyrant ordered testing of the 16,000 mph missile.
Putin is said to have warned Joe Biden of the test launch of the missile - officially known as the RS-28 Sarmat - in advance, while the US president was in Ukraine.
Speaking on a nightly panel discussion about the war hosted by Kremlin mouthpiece Vladimir Solovyov, one military expert talked about how the missiles could be used.
The expert, who was wearing a military uniform, said the “Sarmat is a special weapon” that can deliver “large number of nuclear warheads at once” to a target.
Then in a deranged threat, he continued: “It is impossible to build an all-looking defence system, which means that the United States is vulnerable, that is the first point.
“And the second point is that the Sarmat poses a threat to the most feared facility on US territory, the Yellowstone volcano.”
Lying underneath the tranquil setting of the Yellowstone National Park in the US lies an enormous magma chamber.
It's responsible for the geysers and hot springs that define the area.
But it's also one of the greatest natural threats to human civilisation as we know it - a potential supervolcano.

Fine. You think I disagree with you?
I hope you are correct!! I have been thinking six months.
I fully agree!
Rational thinking is left behind when one is backed into a corner. Remember the oil fields on fire when Saddam knew he was losing? It's called "scorched earth!"
I also fully believe that other events could have the same effect, plus, one HUGE possibility. That is, a mistake! We've come close to mistakes many times, and there is nothing that says it can't happen again -- especially when you consider the escalated, mindless "fog of war" state we are being led into by our obsessed, bungling so-called leaders.
There are many instances of close calls, but one well-documented instance is the Cuban Missle Crises as noted at this link (click here).
In the mid-60s, I served on one of the submarines that sailed out to meet the Ruskies. I was not on board at the time, but many were who made that trip. Their stories will strike fear in your mind (if you and your family are afraid of dying).
We are approaching the same place today! Any fool can see it. If it happens, nobody will win (scorched earth).
It won’t blow until something from below makes the magma chamber swell to an unstable state.
Exactly. If you could simply make openings at the surface (I count that as a few kilometers down too) then we would never have an eruption because we could poke holes above the magma chamber.
Super-eruptions start deep below the earth and the energy is hundreds of times larger than the pool of magma sitting in the upper chamber. For a massive Yellowstone eruption the magma that sits in the chamber now is no more consequential to the eruption than the piece of cork at the top of a wine bottle. Get enough gas generation in the bottle and the cork will be expelled with a rush of liquid behind it.
I’ve been thinking by fall of this year.
It’s going to happen, it seems.
Just when I thought it couldn’t get stupider here
Not at all. Don’t understand how you got that impression.
Great points. Thank you!
If you set off the Yellowstone caldera radiation is the lowest of the concerns…
Most people don't realize just how big and powerful vulcanism really is and super volcanoes are orders of magnitude more powerful than an "average" volcano. It's understandable that they don't. It's hard to wrap the mind around how much energy is at play there.
As for missiles penetrating the magma chamber, I don't think any "bunker buster" missiles ever created can penetrate 4 to 10 miles of solid rock.
These forces are just insane.
I can believe that some Russian lunatic said something like that: "You blow up our pipeline, we blow up Jellystone!"
You are off (size of nuke needed) by a couple orders of magnitude.
... Unless she’s ready to blow anyway.
What?! You can’t be making rational, fact based posts around here! /s
(Sad that I have to add the “/s” for some people, isn’t it?)
Anyway, good explanation! Better than the one I was writing, but, I’m kinda distracted by “incoming” weather, too.
I suppose it might be possible to get something like a Mt. St. Helens type bang if one could get the lake to drain down to the magma. (Steam explosion.) But, that seems very unlikely, and it’s still nowhere near a super-eruption.
I’d add that super eruptions are not necessarily incredibly intense “bangs”. They just go on and on. Krakatau was actually a more intense bang than Tambora, but Tambora erupted with force, longer. Eruption ratings are based on total energy released or total material ejected, not peak numbers.
Thank you!
Ok.
Proof that the Russians have idiot politicians just like our very own Lindsay Graham.
