“SPECIAL NEEDS” NEED separate school-—PERIOD

I understand your frustration, but, alas, that is not how it works. “Special Needs” means he has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) which Federal Law requires that he be taught in the ‘least restrictive’ environment possible. This means he must be in a ‘regular’ classroom as much as possible—next to the normal kids.

While he may face legal consequences for trying to kill the teacher’s aide, his school cannot really punish him if part of his ‘handicap’ includes occasional complete loss of self control and physical violence.

It gets worse. If the school determines that he needs to be in a separate school for teachers’ and other students’ safety, the district and its taxpayers are on the hook for paying for it. If two or three regular teachers have to be let go to pay for his education, so be it. His educational rights trump everyone else’s.

And for the cherry on the top, his district and its taxpayers have to pay for his ‘education’ for 12 months per year until he turns twenty-one.

He was in a separate wing with other special needs students at the school.

This woman was working in that wing. She was a paraprofessional. She took the job to work with these students. She was fairly new to the job (per another source).

It can be a rewarding job, but it can be a tough job, especially when a special needs student with behavioral problems grows to this size.

Some sources are saying these students are given videogames to play to calm down.
