Alex Murdaugh, a once-wealthy and powerful South Carolina attorney on trial for allegedly shooting his wife and son, took the stand Thursday, testifying he had no part in the grisly double murder and blaming an addiction to painkillers for his erratic behavior in front of friends and law enforcement officials.
"I did not shoot my wife or my son any time — ever," he said of Maggie, 52, and Paul, 22, who had been gunned down in June 2021.
Murdaugh admitted he had lied several times to authorities about his whereabouts the night of the shootings.
"I lied about being down there, and I'm so sorry that I did," he said, adding that he was overly "paranoid" and claimed attorneys from his family's law firm urged him not to say a word without representation present.
Murdaugh also apologized to his son Buster and relatives for lying about the last time he saw Maggie and Paul and said once he started lying, he could not stop.
Prosecutors have argued that Murdaugh, who belongs to a powerful family that has dominated the legal landscape for more than a century, killed his family members in a desperate attempt to hide his financial crimes, which they said included swindling clients out of ten million dollars.
The mother and son were killed on June 7, 2021, near the kennels on the family's sprawling, 1,772-acre Colleton County hunting estate.
They were found in a pool of their own blood, Paul dying from two shotgun blasts and Murdaugh's wife being killed by 5 rifle shots.
The prosecution, which rested its case on Friday, also pointed to footage found on Paul Murdaugh's phone that was taken minutes before he died in which multiple witnesses testified hearing Alec Murdaugh's voice despite him claiming he was nowhere near the scene.

According to the pathologist the 1st shotgun blast was on the son’s side and arm......very survivable according to her.
2nd shot was to the head.
“The housekeeper “was tripped by the dogs” climbing up the steps. She died so he, on behalf of her estate, secured a $4 million dollar insurance payout and her family never saw a penny of it. Heck, they didn’t even know anything about it! “

That was one of the most despicable things Murdaugh did. Glad the jury was allowed to hear that and actually see her son testify.
Alex’s story is a block of swiss cheese.
He mighta been spending 50k a week on pills but I doubt he was taking them all..... either was dealing them himself, sharing them or had the mother of all drug tolerances built up.
Such a mystery about the pill money. COUSIN EDDIE probably knows, but he’s a proven liar too.
There were rumors Buster was involved in the death of a HS classmate a few years before all this other stuff happened.
“I didn’t think it was possible for there to be anything more despicable until the housekeeper death came up. Buster is as bad as his father, too. We haven’t heard the last of him, either.”

The speculation is that she was pushed on those steps.
“Alex lied. Maggie and Paul died.”
I would close with that.

The death of Stephen Smith…
“Alex lied. Maggie and Paul died.”
I would close with that.

That would be good. They should list all the lies. It would take half an hour.
The Netflix series is full of misinformation………
There was a guest on Court TV a couple weeks ago that pointed out that Murdaugh would bob his head up and down during the police interviews when he was lying. I noticed his head bobbing today several times.
This person was a so-called body language expert. I can’t remember her name.
I saw that woman say that about the head bobbing. Just heard on TV that JOHN GRISHAM waited in line to get into the trial today.
Yeah but I’d pay to see Eddie on the witness stand.
When the Prosecution AND defense is afraid to question you in front of the jury you are one unpredictable dangerous dude. 😏
If I was on the jury, I would want three things…..
A realistic motive as to why he blew his sons head off and shot his wife five times. (There was no financial gain, no life ins, no girlfriend)
The TWO guns used to commit the murders.
Forensic evidence. (The prosecution has built their case around the complete lack of blood, DNA, fingerprints points to his guilt)
Mostly they are waiting to see if he can wiggle out of being punished for murder.
If he does it will confirm their perception that the system is totally rigged to let the rich and powerful do as they please.
If he doesn't it will confirm the perception of other people that the system is totally fair and honest.
Neither perception is totally correct.
And neither is totally wrong.
Fat Jacks is good too.
