The University of Austin offers 'forbidden courses.' Why are students praising them?

Three students praised the University of Austin's inaugural summer program for fostering civil discourse and open dialogue around subjects that might be considered taboo through its dedication to free speech.

The University of Austin — established as a free speech alternative to other colleges — over the summer offered its "forbidden courses," which were intended to allow students to "inquire openly into vexing questions" about controversial subjects "with honesty and without fear of shame," the university's website states. The classes covered topics ranging from feminism to the history of the Black male experience since the nation's founding.

The difference is in how they are taught. The students are allowed to approach the subject critically. This school is a direct challenge to academic orthodoxy. This is exactly what you would expect with a faculty that includes David Mamet, Peter Boghossian and others. You can learn more about the school at uastin.org

Thank you for posting this. The University of Austin is going against the censorship and wokism that is otherwise smothering academia. I am so disappointed with a number of the responses. Some people just can’t get off their script.

I was expecting it to be a course entitled the Bible as Literature or Western History or Biology or something along those lines.

The people banning books or canceling courses are NEVER the good guys.
