Looks like the train was stopped by emergency braking, causing the rear cars to try to pass the front ones. Sort of like hitting a large, solid object with a motorcycle and going flying over the handlebars.

Well, you couldn’t definitely see the flames in the video, and that may have been what made them break.I wonder if there was a malfunction or sabotage. 20 miles is quite a distance, although I’m sure it takes miles to stop a loaded train.

Brake and bearing failures are the usual problems. There are hotbox/hotwheel sensors but I don't know how widely deployed they are. Or if deployed, if they are maintained.
It's an age old problem for railroads.
