President Herzog: 'Israel is on the verge of a constitutional and social collapse'

Israel’s president called for greater dialogue between the Right and Left, warning Sunday that the country is descending into a major social crisis.

In a televised address Sunday evening, President Isaac Herzog reiterated his call on the Netanyahu government and the Opposition to reach a compromise on the proposed judicial reform plan.

“Some of the things I am going to say tonight may not be pleasant to one side or the other. Over the past few weeks, I have worked with all my strength to bring about a broad agreement [for a compromise]. If one side manages to force its [position] over the other, and it doesn’t matter who prevails, Israeli society as a whole will lose.”

“We need to stop this fiery polarization before it burns us all. We are on the verge of a constitutional and social collapse. I see and hear the protests; a great mass of patriots who are dedicated to the fate of this nation and the state.”

“We are on the verge of civil violence. And in extreme situations like this, like some of my predecessors, I refuse to stand idly by.”

There was a compromise. “You can take Sudetenland, but not the rest of Czechoslovakia”.

Jews’ putative fate was not even discussed at the time. That came later at the Wansee Conference in 1942, and was just between Germans, after the sinking of the Struma and the White Paper made it clear that there would be little to no Jewish immigrants allowed in British Mandatory Palestine. Didn’t want to get the Arabs riled, but they had a huge uprising in Baghdad that year. When the British held onto the vital oil fields in Iraq by the skin of their teeth, there was a huge pogrom, 800 Jews murdered, their bodies dumped into a mass grave.

There are Ethiopians in Israel, as well as some black converts. Not much hate directed towards them, though, and I don’t think they’re very left wing. I say my morning prayers each day opposite an Ethiopian who is a committed Breslover Chassid, and a fellow practitioner of the scribal arts. Wonderful fellow. I only recently learned that he understands English, since we communicate exclusively in Hebrew.

I wonder if this will grow to the point that Biden will use it as an excuse to drop our support for Israel. It’s coming someday.

There’s nothing Constitutional about an out-of-control judiciary. Bibi has to win this, or the left uses its judiciary to seize power for good.
