Metro missing thousands of payments for high-income tax for homeless services

PORTLAND, Ore. — A new high-income tax by Metro is waiting on collections from thousands of households in Multnomah, Clackamas, and Washington counties. Anyone with a late payment could be facing additional fees and interest.

The Supporting Housing Services tax collects 1% of personal income for individuals who make more than $125,000 annually or more than $200,000 for joint filers.

In the past month, Metro has issued roughly 20,000 notices to taxpayers fitting the income requirements for either failing to pay the 2021 tax by April 2022, or for mistakes in their filing, according to Metro spokesperson Nick Christensen.

“We're still trying to find out exactly how many haven't paid their tax, but we know about 20,000 notices have gone out so far,” said Christensen.

As for why so many people may have been unaware of the new tax, Christensen said tax preparations services like TurboTax did not include it in their software, “and we don't know why.”

“It's really unfortunate, it would have made it a lot easier for a lot of people,” he said.

The money collected by the tax goes toward preventative housing services, housing, and shelters, as well as wraparound services like health care and case management.

Anyone who has yet to pay will face additional fees and interest.

I know a few leftist TW@TS living in Portland - lawyers, Nike Execs, Wells Fargo Bankers.

I’ll have to be sure to ask them if they have paid their homeless tax.

I’m sure they have loopholes to get around it. Taxes are for the “little people”.

If you are homeless, $125,000 is a fortune.

Come on, man. Get with the program.

The "You didn't earn that, government let you have it" tax to pay for everyone else.

Funny you should mention that. The IRS just released new a tax form for taxpayers who are not part of the federal government.

So if you make exactly $125K/yr, you have to pony up $1250 of your hard-earned money so the homeless, i.e. drug-addicts, alcoholics and other assorted street vermin, can continue their chosen lifestyle.

If anyone used TurboTax or other preparer those companies should pony the money up. Not the taxpayer.

I bet originally, it was a “Millionaires Tax” for people making over a million. After it got support, they started inching it down.

The problem is that Portland metro is a high cost area—so $125k income single folks/$200K married couples are just getting by—if they want to live in a somewhat safe neighborhood with somewhat safe schools for their kids—and save some money for their retirement.

This is a tax on the middle class—in that area.
