Turkey has been hit by a second massive earthquake, hours after an earlier catastrophic quake devastated the region and killed more than 1,700 people.
The 7.8-magnitude night-time tremor, followed hours later by a slightly smaller one, wiped out entire sections of major Turkish cities in a region filled with millions of people who have fled the civil war in Syria and other conflicts.
The later 7.5 magnitude quake struck at 1.24pm (1024 GMT) two-and-a-half miles southeast of the town of Ekinozu and around 60 miles north of the first quake that has wrought devastation across Turkey and Syria.
Hundreds are still trapped under rubble on both sides of the border as a result of the first, and the toll is expected to rise as rescue workers continue to search through mounds of wreckage for families crushed in their sleep.
Orhan Tatar, an official from the Turkish disaster agency, told reporters that the two quakes were independent of each other. He said hundreds of aftershocks were expected after both. Tremors were felt as far away as Greenland.

Not at my personal disposal, by any means. The fact of “guilt” or “innocence” in the fate of any individual, as a philosophical question, is far beyond my poor capability to reason or understand. The Lord moves in mysterious ways, and sometimes, to the observer, the motives may be too dark to grasp.
And borrowing the concept of karma is not in and of itself a bad thing. There is no such thing as a “pure” Christianity.
But there is faith, even optimism, in the face of oppression and doubt. We may only emulate, to the best of our means, and if we fail, as we surely shall, grace may yet be shed upon us. Piety and obedience are still recognized in the end.
It’s unimaginable.
The worst part about the first earthquake: it happened at 4:17 am local time. As such, most of the population were asleep inside their homes. Given the massive number of buildings flattened by the first earthquake, I could see the death toll reach 20,000 or higher. đ
If it’s far beyond your reasoning, how did you come to the conclusion God smote all those people over Erdogan being a jerk about Sweden and Finland joining NATO?
Yes, if you are a Christian, borrowing the concept of Karma from Buddhism is a bad (and stupid) thing — unless you are one of those make-up-your-own-religion-to-suit-your-fancy New Ager types. Then any old mishmash goes.
Christianity is all about redemption. Not so Karma. Read your C.S. Lewis (if you think you are Christian rather than New Age). He explained it well. The wheel of Karma can never be broken, just goes on and on. Think about it.
You contradict yourself a lot in that post. You do realize that?
Yes, unimaginable. How my heart hurts for those poor people.
When Iran had a severe earthquake a few years ago, Israel offered help and they refused.
I’ve seen videos of 10-15 story buildings collapsing. This is horrific.
May God help them...
Given recent events, mankind will likely wipe itself out long before the rest of the universe does so.
Seems like a warning shot. You better accept the new NATO members
Hey you! Hope you are doing well. Haven’t seen you around in a while.
Well said. This can go for many such posts that are now common on FR these days. It is a reminder that not all Conservatives are Christians, and (just like many liberals) many of the ones who claim to be Christians let their politics and personal prejudices guide their Christianity and not the other way around.
It’s winter there as well....not exactly favorable conditions for rescue or staying alive underneath a falling building.
Nothing to do with that...Turkey sits on a earthquake fault line...this is nothing new to them.
The large aftershock is a major problem, especially for places with shoddy construction. I feel bad for the people. Awful situation.
Don't forget the Clinton Foundation. They will be right there to rebuild the hospitals.
Isaiah 51:6 tells us.... the Earth will ‘wax old like a garment’,
Hebrews 1:10-12, anticipates the famous second law of thermodynamics, or law of entropy, indicating that everything in the physical universe is growing old and wearing out. God created everything in the beginning, winding it up like a great clock, so to speak. Because of sin and the curse, however, it has been running down and âperishingâ ever since. Jesus also said, âHeaven and earth shall pass awayâ (literally âare passing awayâ) (Matthew 24:35).
However..... Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousnessâ (2 Peter 3:12-13).
â God is smiting Turkey for its intransigence in allowing Sweden and Fenland join NATO.â
Donât attribute wacky theories to God.
Every person on the planet deserves to be smited for something.
God didn’t set the earth on a downward slope....man did in the garden. Sin has consequences throughout the ages....the earth didn’t escape that. It grows old year after year.
