I suspect we did not even know that the balloon was there until it was over Montana. Otherwise why would we not shoot it down over Alaska?
They can reassemble aircraft that crashed on land and learn what caused the crash. I’m sure plastic film will look pretty much the same either intact or ripped all to hell and gone.

Beware of the balloon of tonkin. Deep state wants war with China, which would be insane.
They are not interested in the balloon envelope, they want to study the payload package suspended underneath.
