The decision to move forward with providing the tanks marks a reversal for the Biden administration, which had been resisting pressure from Germany to send them to Ukraine.
President Joe Biden on Wednesday announced that the United States is sending 31 Abrams tanks to Ukraine in its war against Russia.
The U.S. will also provide the necessary training and supplies needed to operate and run these tanks, he said.
NBC News reported the development Tuesday.
The president said sending the tanks will "enhance Ukraine’s capacity to defend its territory and achieve its strategic objectives" because they are "the most capable tanks in the world.”
"That’s what this is about — helping Ukraine defend and protect Ukrainian land. It is not an offensive threat to Russia, there is no offensive threat to Russia," the president said.
During a background call previewing Biden’s remarks, senior administration officials said the announcement is “very much a continuation of our effort to provide Ukraine with the capabilities that they need to continue to better defend themselves.”
“And it’s also in keeping with that representative of a long term, long term commitment that we have to Ukraine’s defense needs,” a senior administration official said.

Those are not my assumptions. It is a CSIS study.
All the annexed territory will remain a part of Russia and, if Ukraine survives as a nation, it will remain neutral by the end of all this. You’re bat sh#t crazy if you’ve deluded yourself into thinking otherwise.
“Will remain part of Russia”? You mean like Zaporizhzhia? An “annexed” city of 800,000 that has never been part of Russia. Never has been. Never will be.
It certainly is “bat sh#t” to claim a city of near million people as being yours without ever even controlling it. Obviously, you have constructed a fantasy world and now reality is shattering it.
>>Yep, darn shame that Putin led his country into a war that they are doomed to lose.<<
Hopefully they choose not to burn down the house in the meantime...hint hint...WWIII
That threat got old a year ago.
Here he is folks a real life General Buck Turgison in all his glory!
Read it and weep or laugh, your call.
“WHY?”
>>>>>>>>>>>>
In order to stop the islamo-neo-soviet-inspired-Russia to take over Ukraine and the rest of Europe which America depends on for its economy and vital specific technology .
The Islamo-soviet axis coalition against Ukraine and Western interests right now is : Russia, Belarus, North Korea, IRAN, Chechnya and the entire CSTO. They are ALL americas most extreme historical enemies. And they are all ganged together. If they do it, we do the same with OUR allies.
FairPlay.
I’m sorry MEGAN to imply that your woke military expertise is not even close, but nice try (not).
Meanwhile it is rumored that Russia is negotiating with Afghanistan to buy the military equipment abandoned by Biden.
The Russian Neo-soviets running the deep-state in the Kremlin have plenty of redundancy. If Putin dies he will be immediately replaced by yet another enthusiastic warmongering land-grabber.
Why do have to care?
We have no strategic interest in Ukraine.
Why aren’t you helping in Ukraine, yourself?
“This is a bad mistake”.
Yes, a very, very bad mistake by Putin to have started this unnecessary war.
Wonder what version? What ammo? How much kickback?
Whole Europe is sending tanks : Germany, Sweden, Finland, Italy, UK, Spain, Poland. France was the first sending lighter tanks, but now they are talking about sending their fantastic Leclerc.
Sweden is now also sending the Archer artillery system. Just as great as the hi mars if not a tad better.
Assumption: We don’t use allies, i.e. for example we use the Germans when necessary for mortar rounds, NBC suits, body armor as we have in the past. We have had the UK, Germans, and other make stuff for us, and us for them in the past.
Assumption: that is what we can manufacture / our capacity. It says nothing about what is already in stock. When I did my demo training in 1996, I was using TNT from the 50s, not what was made that year. Point being, you have huge inventories and we had several big wars between that time and were still using up stuff from the Korean war era. The “depletion of inventory” stories pop up in EVERY war. Mostly BS.
Assumption: We care. Meaning that often when we “give away” weapons, even if they are still used by us, it’s older stuff that we’re phasing out / replacing anyhow. There has been a push to replace much of the tube artillery with containerized vertical launch systems.
These are faster (no reloading, 1 or more per second), more survivable (counter battery), more mobile (even HMMWV or UH-60), longer range (as in times 2), ***FAR*** more accurate (near or even precision, 6m radius >90% probability), and feed back information on their way to the target. Example of such a system from the past which I know of but was cancelled: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XM501_Non-Line-of-Sight_Launch_System (these type of systems beat tube artillery in near every aspect - except cost). Do not be surprised if you read about some unit somewhere getting an all new system fielded soon.
Because the Russians sure have destroyed so many HIMARS and other weapons we've given them /s.
You guys are just dumber than s***.
Why? ...it consumes FAR more fuel than any other model in the world - that requires FAR more support...
>>>>>
True, you are right.
However, the primary goal of sending the Abrams tanks goes beyond the technical logic you just wrote about.
The US shipments of Abrams tanks to Ukraine is more like a symbolic gesture.
It’s foremost a show of political will and unity with Europe against the Russia-Chechnya-Belarus-North Korea-IRAN-CSTO coalition attacking Ukraine.
Also, Germany had said all along it wouldn’t send its own tanks if the USA didn’t symbolically do the same. So... now the USA is doing just that, and consequently Germany is unlocking all export restrictions that plagued the great Leopard 2 tanks. Germany and many other EU nations are now sending the Leopards to stop Russia from further land-grabbing.
Shout out to Grimace.
There are aggressions and injustices all over the world - even tribal wars.
China’s got some serious human rights problems... Innocent protesters are being killed in Iran. Since it’s inception Israel has been holding off insane Palestinians... Should we be sending tanks? I don’t think so.
Ukraine’s not a democracy - they’re one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Putin doesn’t want NATO on his doorstep just like we didn’t want Russian missiles 90 miles off shore in Cuba - off OUR doorstep... Any effort should have been focused on negotiations - not war.
If there’s a border to protect with our taxpayer money it should be our border - not Ukraine’s.
