Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos paid a rare visit to the newspaper’s offices and took part in an editorial staff meeting on Thursday — igniting panic among the publication’s journalists that layoffs were imminent.
Bezos surprised staffers on Thursday morning when he showed up to the newspaper’s headquarters on K Street in the nation’s capital just weeks after publisher Fred Ryan announced looming layoffs during a stormy, chaotic all-hands meeting.
The Amazon founder’s presence in the newsroom prompted one staffer, who was dressed in a red shirt emblazoned with the insignia of the newspaper guild, to accost the billionaire and ask him directly why management was planning to lay people off rather than offer buyouts, according to multiple reports.
Bezos declined to address the matter, only saying that he was there to listen, according to the news site.
“I’m convinced this is going to be a protracted, painful wait for a lot of people,” a Washington Post journalist told the Daily Beast.
Bezos’ refusal to comment on Ryan’s announcement that layoffs are scheduled for the first quarter of this year has further stoked anxiety across the newsroom, according to the publication.
“[People] don’t know what to make of it,” a Washington Post journalist told the news site.

Uh oh... the big dollar guys are pulling a lot of plugs lately. Almost as if they know something.
There’s something financially VERY bad coming soon.
Now that's smart.
Well they may have noticed that Musk flushed 70% of the jobs at Tweater and despite a lot of bedwetting by the media, it appears to me to be running OK.
Learn to code.
Fascinating. Amazon is in the process of erecting Amazon II, a 50+ story virtual tower of Babel ziggurut construction to feature Hanging Gardens of Babylon enhancements where a large office park, Crystal City was located in Arlington. I hope this is a nemesis moment of pride preceding the fall.
Bezos could shut down the Compost to get rid of the “guild” and then restart it halfway around the world with slave labor—would not be surprised if it happens.
These a-holes all took joy in shutting down small businesses during the lockdown. F them.
Crystal City always reminded me of the classic science fiction book by J. G. Ballard, “The Crystal World”.
It is Deep State HQ—word of what happens there is not supposed to leave there.
Bezos could shut down the Compost to get rid of the “guild” and restart by having the news print written by AI.
Fixed it for you. These reporters don’t realize soon they will be replaced by machines. The technology is extremely close. Microsoft is close to investing 10 Billion dollars more in OpenAI. Chatgpt is actually amazing, but reporters will be a thing of the past.
Good point on AI—Deep State propaganda is well within the reach of current technology—uses the same key words over and over, supports certain people and opposes others, focus on certain topics and avoids others etc etc etc.
Of course true AI would rebel against the cult of lies and conclude that homo sapiens will need to be destroyed to cleanse the planet.
I dont understand.
They were told that layoffs were coming in the 1rst quarter.
And here it is... first quarter.
Jeff Bezos is just thanking them for bending over and doing his bidding
Floggings and firing squads would be more beneficial for the long-suffering nation. I can dream.
Agreed
I found it to be the land of the banal. Mostly populated with Navy logistics agencies. The Navy largely moved to reconditioned, and much nicer quarters at the Washington Navy Yard. Aside from Navairsyscom who drew the booby prize of relocating to Patuxent River, something the base management there had been maneuvering and politicing for literally decades. Crystal City’s buildings were overage and unattractive to new tenants. Bezo’s move was facilitated by H R Smith, the real estate company that largely developed Crystal City. The point is not the reconditioning and rebuilding of an overage office park, it is the flamboyantly egregiousness of the huge size of Amazon 2. The massive increase in the currency supply since the 2008 crash has fed this gratuitous materialism seemingly everywhere in the US.
This has come to some end and the longer it goes there will be a global contraction that the wizards of smart cannot control.
Justify your job. This is the old school way.
They are smack next door to DC National Airport, the favorite and untouchable transportation hub of Congress. Bezos will literally have to get Congressional approval to build anything there.
He already has and construction has begun, Bezos is more powerful than Congress
