Another major HIV vaccine trial fails

The only HIV vaccine in a late-stage trial has failed, researchers announced Wednesday, dealing a significant blow to the effort to control the global HIV epidemic and adding to a decadeslong roster of failed attempts.

Known as Mosaico, the trial was the product of a public-private partnership including the U.S. government and the pharmaceutical giant Janssen. It was run out of eight nations in Europe and the Americas, including the U.S., starting in 2019. Researchers enrolled nearly 3,900 men who have sex with men and transgender people, all deemed at substantial risk of HIV.

The leaders of the study decided to discontinue the mammoth research effort after an independent data and safety monitoring board reviewed the trial’s findings and saw no evidence the vaccine lowered participants’ rate of HIV acquisition.

Most of the drugs used to TREAT HIV are highly toxic to the body. Damage to bone density, liver and kidney damage, and heart damage are only a few hazards.

The last CDC statistics show that 70% of NEW HIV cases were in Gay and Bisexual men. That’s about 25,000 individuals who can easily prevent the disease by changing their practices. They would also not infect their female partners who are largely receivers and not transmitters of the disease.

Why do we spend so much money on an optional disease more like drugs than cancer?

HIV is a retrovirus and there are no vaccines for any retrovirus harmful to humans. The genetic makeup of retroviruses and their essential difference with other viruses has caused science to continue to fail at making vaccines against them. Their genetic makeup - two complete and duplicate strands of RNA in their nucleus - aids the virus in alluding measures against it. Instead of requiring the hosts DNA to facilitate replication of the viron, each of the RNA strands it carries can produce the required DNA using the reverse transcriptase ensyme - host DNA not required.
