Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) issued a joint statement Friday calling on Congress to avoid a potential default “forced by extreme MAGA Republicans,” the opening salvo in what will be a months-long battle over raising the federal debt limit.
Lawmakers in both parties predict the Democratic-controlled White House and Senate are headed for a showdown with newly elected Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) over the debt limit after McCarthy pledged to House conservatives last week to attach spending reforms to debt limit legislation.
Schumer and Jeffries called on Republicans to move quickly on debt limit legislation without having to go through lengthy and arduous spending negotiations, as Congress did three times under President Trump.
“Congress must act on legislation to prevent a disastrous default, meet our obligations and protect the full faith and credit of the United States. A default forced by extreme MAGA Republicans could plunge the country into a deep recession and lead to even higher costs for America’s working families on everything from mortgages and car loans to credit card interest rates,” the Democratic leaders said in a joint statement, referring to former President Trump’s slogan, “Make America Great Again.”

Stop the generational theft.
The Democrats need to restrain spending. Do they ever think to do this?
Now they want to talk to our side. I don’t want to hear anything from the left until the debt clock starts going the opposite way, rapidly.
Why waste a month? Just go ahead and do it now..like dems need permission to do anything.
OH NOES. A “limit” that doesn’t exist is going to cause “default” on something.
Here’s a thought to the idiot who said “we don’t have a spending problem, we have a paying for it problem” STOP SPENDING MONEY!
Defund Schumer.
We didn’t get to vote on it, but its demanded we pay for it.
This when a Republican needs to get up and say it is time for the radical socialist left stop their inflation creating spending before our grandkids grandkids are broke.
Oh..you can count on, at least, 19 RINOs to go along.
Democracy!
Want to avoid default? Okay, how about some line item defunding? End all funding for NPR/PBS, defund 87K IRS workers, end all funding and cancel any unspent funds for Ukraine, end all funding for border security in foreign countries, end all funding for illegal aliens, terminate all work permits for illegal aliens to free up work for Americans to get them off unemployment. Okay, that’s just a few shovel-ready savings to avoid default.
And he needs to tell everyone WHY he’s telling them to eff off.
I’d really like to hear our side begin making the case for how every man woman and child is negatively impacted by this ridiculous spending by the grifting dirtbags.
No. No more debt. No matter what happens.
Default all the way!
Let’s get some serious budget cuts in place before we agree to do any ceiling lifts. But we won’t default on the debt for a long time. The gov’t can choose to not give out welfare, not fund the IRS, etc...before we default.
And how much money the US doesn’t have did they vote to send to Ukraine?
The new R Congress needs to start immediately to reduce or eliminating funding all spending programs other than Social Security and a few critical needs. I believe the military is too fat and can reduces spending. There are many things they do that have little semblance to military. Maybe set a goal to reduce every department some percentage point, say 5% per year. But then the Republican Party should also go on a full court pres to inform, and educate the public why it is necessary to stop this obscene spending.
I am SO tired of us being so dignified . . . . we've been conditioned to accept their DEROGATORY MAGA REPUBLICAN !
Raise it if they agree to drop the 87,000 IRS agents.
Raise it if they agree to Defund the IRS.
