Lol!
I didn’t know this for a long time, but ‘sticking your head in the oven’ won’t kill you anymore—thanks to natural gas. Back in the day, ‘gas’ in town was coal gas converted at a ‘gas works’ and the unburnt gas contained a lot of carbon monoxide—more than enough to kill you. Besides the risk of explosion, gas coming out of an unlit burner or stove (anyone remember having to light a stove/oven?) was deadly.
So our grandparents were able to cope and survive with gas that can poison you, but we can’t deal with a gas that might cause some breathing problems?
