More than one in five drivers believe that the Government should actively be discouraging the use of private cars. An expert claimed many who own cars "don't want to".

Recent findings have revealed that one in five (21 percent) of those surveyed think owning a car is wasteful and should be discouraged by Governments. The research from Bolt looked into what would trigger British car owners aged between 18 and 39 to move away from owning a private car.

For years, our family made the trip up California’s Central Valley on Christmas Day, to see family. We shared the road with many old cars, filled with poor families traveling to see their own relatives. It really struck me that having their own vehicles and their own schedule gave them true freedom/autonomy. They could have as wonderful a holiday as anyone, regardless of socioeconomic status. America the beautiful.

This is the scary part. There are all kinds of way governments can ‘discourage’ car ownership. Not allowing parking garages to be built in cities. Britain already has ‘congestion’ fees for cities, you drive in a certain part of London, you have to pay a fee. Raise the fuel tax. Eliminate street parking for bike lanes.

And in the name of safety, require cars to pass rigorous inspections. This is how Japan encourages the sale of new cars. The older a car gets, the tougher and more expensive the inspection costs. The perfectly fine older cars are then exported.
