McCarthy set to fail on eighth ballot as speaker chaos continues into third day

House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is poised to fall short of the support needed to become speaker on the eighth ballot, with a group of 20 conservatives continuing to push back on the California Republican on the third day of votes on the floor.

His detractors have said they will continue to vote against him unless he makes additional concessions for rules changes.

Florida Rep. Brian Mast (R) nominated McCarthy, while former House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs (R-AZ) nominated Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) on the floor. Although the 20 holdouts had lined up behind Donalds on multiple rounds, Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Josh Brecheen (R-OK) voted for Kevin Hern, the chairman of the Republican Study Committee. Gaetz voted for former President Donald Trump, as he had on the seventh ballot.

Yes. You’re right, of course.

But at some point McCarty is going to run out of Conservatives to flip before they run out of ballots. And then, McCarty must turn to the Democrats to pick up the additional votes. And please trust me, the favors he will have to be prepared to concede will be painful for him, the GOP and the country.

And don’t discount the fact that this process also works in reverse. Hakeem Jeffries ALSO has over 200 votes. There are plenty of weak-willed RINOS in Congress that would be happy to see Jeffries with the gavel. If that were to ever happen, we would be looking at Pelosi 2.0. Disaster!

Switch to mail-in ballots and let AZ or PA count them.

That could lead to another march on the Capitol.

“When the press calls it chaos and Mitch McConnell and Mike Pence both support McCarthy, you *know* the 19 are doing the right thing. God Bless them!”

Doesn’t Trump support McCarthy? Why did you leave his name out?

"Why did you leave his name out?"

Trump has some bad advisors. I've called him out for it before. Recently I refused to support Oz in PA and cheesed-off a bunch of republicans. I did not supply an all inclusive list in my prior post and managed to twist your sensibilities. Okay. So what? Let it go. We conservatives are not in lock-step with Trump or any other. We are free and critical thinkers. My point stands. And it is accurate. If you want to make a similar point and include Trump in your list, then man-up and do it instead of whining about my point.
