McCarthy set to fail on eighth ballot as speaker chaos continues into third day

House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) is poised to fall short of the support needed to become speaker on the eighth ballot, with a group of 20 conservatives continuing to push back on the California Republican on the third day of votes on the floor.

His detractors have said they will continue to vote against him unless he makes additional concessions for rules changes.

Florida Rep. Brian Mast (R) nominated McCarthy, while former House Freedom Caucus Chairman Andy Biggs (R-AZ) nominated Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) on the floor. Although the 20 holdouts had lined up behind Donalds on multiple rounds, Reps. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) and Josh Brecheen (R-OK) voted for Kevin Hern, the chairman of the Republican Study Committee. Gaetz voted for former President Donald Trump, as he had on the seventh ballot.

As long as nothing is getting done, I’m good with this. Would rather have a stalled deal than a deal that doesn’t work.

It’s some kind of theater, not chaos.

Maybe McCarthy has to put on a good show for his puppeteers.

The more he concedes to the conservatives, the more McCarthy demonstrates that he is not really a conservative to begin with and is even less qualified to be the Speaker.

He has no character, lives with the homosexual in his apartment in Washington DC. He took money from the FTX bitcoin scam guy and used it to work against Republican conservatives in the 2022 election. I don’t care what promises he makes now he needs to be rejected.

Note the “chaos” description. That is psychological manipulation.

It’s a procedural process. The opposite of chaos.

INMO. This is the best thing that ever happened in the House. Normally, they all roll over and let the feckless, leadership have their way with them.

I have heard bitching, ad nausium, about how spineless Congress is. Also, how we always being screwed.

Finally, there are some trying to turn that around and all the spineless whiners on this forum are ready to fold, run and comply.

Talk about Stockholm syndrome. What would our country if our ancestors had done that?

Are they saying that all of these votes are “subverting our democracy” yet?

... and a deal that we'll need to live with for two years.
It's worth a few days -- a week -- at the start to work things out ... to garner commitments from the leadership.

The establishment thinks their guy McCarthy gets stronger when he keeps losing, now that’s funny.

In reality, he’s losing momentum as these votes go on and he refuses to deal with the HFC. Give them 4 seats on rules and then we can vote.

Steven Hayworth brought up some good points at Powerline. The newly elected members have not been sworn in yet so they actually are unable to vote until then. Also, no one gets paid until there is a speaker so this will end at some point.

Maybe they think something of substance will happen at the Supreme Court tomorrow? when most of them might be arrested?

We CAN hope!

There was a video clip of Nancy saying how lucky we are that the GOP wasn't in charge on 1/6 because that's when the country needed leadership???? Didn't she fail to protect the building by turning down thousands of guard troops??? Is that leadership?
