It takes 218 votes to become Speaker (as I understand it) so there is zero risk of a Democrat becoming Speaker without some Republican votes. I support the holdouts.

Never underestimate moderate Rinos ability to switch sides. Jeffries only needs 6 Rinos to defect.

Specifically it takes a majority of those present to become speaker. Assuming all 435 are there, then yes it takes 218.

The only ways Jeffries could win is if a few Republicans vote with the Dims, or if some Republicans go home and they have the vote with less than 435 present (and the majority there are Dims).

Finding 5 would not be hard. You could find 5 in NY NJ and Pa.
