The blizzard ended Christmas morning, but the emergency was far from over.
With first responders in Buffalo and the Northtowns finally able to start maneuvering, the devastation from the fierce winter storm that battered the region with gale force winds, lake-effect snow and bitter subfreezing temperatures was coming to light.
Sister says Buffalo man died in the blizzard on his 56th birthday On Day 3 of the storm, desperation was growing.
At least 17 people were dead, and authorities said there was no question that the death toll would increase.
I have been listening to the scanner for 15 mins and 3 dead reported in that time...police have asked anyone with a snowmobile to assist with search and rescue

Looters should be shot on sight.
They warned people to not try to go out in this because they didn’t have the resources or manpower to rescue everyone who was stranded.
I have family who lives in the hardest hit areas and they tell me that the warnings were up constantly.
But no, there’s always someone who considers the warnings fear porn, or it’s just another winter storm, a big nothing burger.
I guess they learned.
My family heeded the warnings, stocked up ahead of time, and rode out the storm just fine with plenty of food and water, safe in their own homes, car parked in the garage.

That didn’t take long. Some folks just can’t wait for a crisis to loot stores.
more looting on scanner and now saying people are trying to start fires to burn buildings down
Same here. I’m listening to the “Buffalo Police, Fire and EMS” and “Cheektowaga Depew Lackawanna Fire” feeds on Broadcastify.
Currently the Cheektowaga Depew Lackawanna Fire feed, which covers 8ish depts in the area, has a working multi alarm fire, and 5 other calls. Everything from broken/frozen sprinklers, people trapped in houses, etc. FD is transportation people with minor issues, where possible, in the engines or ladders as no ambulances are available.
Also try the Cheektowaga Depew Lackawanna Fire feed. Have like 5-6 active calls including a multi alarm fire, trapped people at home, broken/frozen sprinklers, etc.

Global warming is going to kill us all.
Maybe New York needs to ban assault blizzards since it’s their answer to regular crime.🤔🤔
In the old days people were more prepared. Always have a backup source for heat during the winter.
Then they wonder why stores won’t open...muy food desert.
Wood stove and two cords of seasoned hardwood stacked outside my back door.... And we live in Texas.
I heard that several suburban mayors declared that police and fire departments would NOT be responding for 48 hours, or longer, saying - “you are on your own.”
Is this true?
Prior preparation really is the thing. Big storm was inbound here in w Idaho mid week to hit by Saturday. I stocked up Friday and haven’t left the house since and won’t until probably Tuesday due to heavy snow and ice covered roads.
Natural Selection, then.
Yes, there always is some fool who thinks "It won't happen to me!"
In Florida, when a hurricane is bearing down, you will see plenty of fools with surfboards rush to the beach "to catch the big one!" Sometimes they do "catch the big one"—and their last one.
Global warming, eh?
