That's crap. We didn't want that war, and it has benefitted nobody except perhaps the owners of some coal mines in Europe.

Well of course he didn't. He wanted to go barreling into a neighboring country, conquer it, and absorb it into his own without anyone in the rest of the world raising an eyebrow. Why wouldn't he prefer that result? I imagine Germany wasn't a fan of the "proxy war" when the US was supplying critical war materials to the UK and the USSR either.
