House passes $1.7 trillion spending bill that rewrites U.S. election law, sending it to Biden to sign

WASHINGTON — The House on Friday voted to finalize a massive $1.7 trillion government funding bill, sending it to President Joe Biden and marking the end of two years of Democrats controlling both chambers of Congress.

The package contains a major boost to military spending and nearly $45 billion in assistance to Ukraine. It overhauls federal election law by revising the Electoral Count Act of 1887 to try to prevent another Jan. 6. The bill funds a swath of domestic programs as well, averting a shutdown and keeping the government funded through next fall.

The vote was 225 to 201, largely along part lines. Nine Republicans voted for the measure, one Democrat voted against it, and one member, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., voted present.

“We have a big bill here, because we have big needs for our country,” outgoing House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said on the floor. “At the same time — please to put a penny in the old man’s hat — we address the needs of America’s working families, with special focus on our children.”

The legislation passed the Senate on Thursday by a vote of 68-29.

Biden has championed the bill. In a statement after its passage, he called it "good for our economy our competitiveness, and our communities" and vowed to sign it into law "as soon as it reaches my desk."

Bit by bit, week by week, we are watching the destruction of our country.

The forces of decomposition are powerful and largely unopposed. The GOP is nowhere to be found,

The deep state is losing the war against Russia, but its winning the war against the American people.

How the heck does the bill overhaul “federal election law by revising the Electoral Count Act of 1887 to try to prevent another Jan. 6.”

"The update passed by the Senate would clarify that the vice president's role in the proceedings is purely ceremonial.

Importantly, the measure also would raise the bar for objecting to a state's slate of electors. As it stands now, it takes just one member of the House and one senator to challenge a state's electors and send both chambers into a potentially days-long debate period, even without legitimate concerns.

The new legislation would raise the threshold for an objection to 20% of the members of each chamber."

The Senate passes election reform designed to head off another Jan. 6 Yeah it's NPR, but I just wanted a summary of what changed and that was the first article that came up.

I don't see this as major changes that affect our democracy. I never bought that Pence had the power to refuse to count certified results from the states.

Congress however does, and changing it from 1 member of each state to 20% of each changer, does raise the bar. But not so much that either party wouldn't be able to mount a challenge.

The real issue is how to ensure that there are controls over the elections, that those laws and controls are followed, that prosecutions occur when they are not, and that states don't certify questionable elections. THAT is what needs to be solved to protect our democracy.

So in my opinion, the election changes do nothing to harm our democracy, but also do nothing to protect it. They do not address what needs to be addressed.

Maybe they want to make it obligatory to certify the vote. Turn farce into law.

I’m so sick and tired of these Washington D.C. malcontents that have total disregard for the taxpayer. Both parties are guilty of wasting OUR dollars for their personal benefit. In D.C. money is simply a number on a piece of paper. The federal debt is of no concern.

We have allowed them to win. They do not fear us. They commit all kinds of trasonous acts and get away with it.

We are pathetic lemmings sitting around waiting for their next big moves against us.

After the first of the year, we will see it coming.

That’s the final straw. The Constitution is dead.

The Republican Party is fully owned by Democrats.
