When a gang of thugs invades your home and starts beating you while stealing your stuff, you don’t stand there and try to debate the law and the rules of boxing with them. At that point, the time for those things is long gone. All that you can do is fight back (hopefully possessing the proper “tools”) and eliminate the threat.

President Trump knew he had that power -- the exact same power he would have used to remand the presented elector's slates in 2020 back to each state's legislature.
