Figures from the National Poison Data System (NPDS) show adolescent cannabis use spiked by 245 percent between 2000 and 2020.
Research findings were published on Monday in the journal Clinical Toxicology, and detail a decline in the rate of alcohol abuse over the same period.
“Ethanol abuse cases exceeded the number of marijuana cases every year from 2000 until 2013,” explained study author Adrienne Hughes, an assistant professor of emergency medicine at Oregon Health & Science University, in a release.
However, “since 2014, marijuana exposure cases have exceeded ethanol cases every year, and by a greater amount each year than the prior,” Hughes added.
Data showed cases of marijuana exposure were relatively stable from 2000 to 2009, but began increasing in 2011 and saw a big uptick between 2017 and 2020.
In addition to marijuana and alcohol, dextromethorphan had the highest total number of exposure cases over the study period, although use peaked in 2006 and has since decreased.
Compared with all other forms, edible marijuana had the highest average monthly increase in call rates to poison control centers. Cannabis extracts, like those used in vaping products, also grew in popularity, data showed.
Experts hypothesize the rise in marijuana exposure rates is due to the increased popularity of edible cannabis products that are now widely available across the country thanks to states’ legalization of recreational marijuana.

You mean the people who insert the word "like" twenty or thirty times in every sentence?
Funny, do not see alcohol signs saying, "get drunk off your a$$".
And certainly no signs for tobacco products of any sort.
I call BS.
I would believe that percent admit it now vs then.
It’s very difficult to date someone in the black community in the Atlanta area who doesn’t smoke and when they say smoke they mean weed. It’s not like this in other states I’ve been to. I feel like it’s always in the air. I don’t react well to the smell. Second hand exposure makes me irritable and I feel my senses dulled. Can’t imagine what I’d feel if I tried it. No thank you. It’s not harmless. Why are we supposedly anti tobacco but embracing weed? Makes no sense. Both will destroy your lungs just like coal dust or frequently cooking with firewood. Libertarians were wrong about legalization. The Left loves it because it gives another tool to soften minds. They want addicts because they’re early to manipulate and they want them voting.

“You mean the people who insert the word “like” twenty or thirty times in every sentence?”
Like totally! Oh! My! God!
Like, you know, like literally. Like literally super.
It’s a sad shame that so many feel the need to sedate themselves to the world. I seriously believe that politicians want this to happen so they can get away with more of their crap.
And yes, I know there are some people who use it “medicinally (insert eye roll).”
Yes, I hear it all the time too from my pot smoking relatives. Actually they have this thing called "edibles" in which you eat the marijuana.
No thanks to any of that for me. I have enough vices already.
I first tried marijuana at 14 years old. Several years later, between 17 - 18, I became a mostly regular smoker. I'm 2 years out from 50 now, and been pretty much a regular smoker for the last 25 years or so.
During that time, I also became a father to 2 successful kids who are now grown and very productive members of society themselves, working, paying taxes, etc. One of them has found gainful employment in a marijuana dispensary. The other works dispatch for a regional trucking company, and only touches the stuff on special occasions. I also completed a 4 year degree (while working full time and raising kids) and have managed to become somewhat successful in my own right.
Take your bogus stereotypes and stick 'em. As with guns, it comes down to the person, not the gun or marijuana. Marijuana is a lot better than filling our kids with pharmaceuticals.
Little too much common sense there. Just like there is a large group of people that can handle their firearms safely and not shoot anyone. And then you have the criminals.
And while we're at it lets take all tobacco products off the market.
Alcohol is different, but tobacco, yes, ban all tobacco, including vaping.
Agree
I wonder how bad can someone’s mind be when they have to be stoned to feel better.
Ignore him/her/it. He’s one of FR’s degenerate addicts pushing the “vending machine narcotics” agenda.
I was being facetious. You're never going to legislate away the human propensity to ''cure the soul by means of the senses''.
