Senate Votes to Impose Rail Contract, Rejects Measure Granting Workers 7 Paid Sick Days

The U.S. Senate voted Thursday to pass a resolution imposing a contract on freight rail workers but rejected a concurrent measure that would give workers seven guaranteed paid sick days.

H.J. Resolution 100 passed the Senate by a margin of 80-15, surpassing the 60-vote threshold. The Biden Administration brokered a tentative deal in August between the unions and carriers, but rank-and-file members of four of the twelve unions in the deal rejected it. Paid sick leave for workers was a central hold-up to the deal moving forward.

Never claimed to be good at politics. But I don’t see how dragging in the Ukraine issue would help in what amounts to emergency legislation to stop a rail strike. As near as I can tell, no Federal money is involved in forcing the unions to accept the settlement despite some unions voting against it. Requiring the railroads to grant sick pay or not again does not involve Federal money.

You have not read the fine print. The workers can call any morning and demand the day off. They merely have to claim they do not feel well... or a child does not feel well.

Supervisors are strictly forbidden to ask for any proof of illness or child's illness.

Any worker can call in sick anytime, because they "feel ill" or a "child is ill".

A supervisor is forbidden from requiring a doctor's excuse or any documentation.
