Report: California gun data breach was unintentional

California’s Department of Justice mistakenly posted the names, addresses and birthdays of nearly 200,000 gun owners on the internet because officials didn’t follow policies or understand how to operate their website, according to an investigation released Wednesday.

The investigation, conducted by an outside law firm hired by the California Department of Justice, found that personal information for 192,000 people was downloaded 2,734 times by 507 unique IP addresses during a roughly 12-hour period in late June. All of those people had applied for a permit to carry a concealed gun.

The data was exposed just days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that people have a right to carry guns in public. The decision invalidated a California law that said people must give a reason for wanting to carry a concealed weapon, such as a threat to their safety. Lawmakers then tried to pass new restrictions for concealed carry permits, but failed.

Chuck Michel, an attorney and president of the California Rifle & Pistol Association. Michel said his group is preparing a class action lawsuit against the state.

“There is a lot of gaps and unanswered questions, perhaps deliberately so, and some spin on this whole notion of whether this was an intentional release or not,” he said. “This is not the end of the inquiry.”

Intentional? Even people who bought the Brooklyn Bridge aren’t naive enough to believe that…

I notice there are no massive data breaches listing what illegal aliens are receiving 10s of $$billions$$ in welfare, SS, and Medicaid payments and where they are living.

Odd.

There needs to be limited access to only a few people with data like this. If it gets out all with access are held financially responsible.
Same with Trumps tax returns. Only those that receive it pay if it gets out. A quick trial, no BS, just pay.

Sure it was.

And this right here is why the left wants these databases to exist nationally and in every state.

No “data” is safe no matter how much they tell you how safe it is. From health records to financial records to gun records, it’s basically an open book, the new normal....just like election fraud.

“The CA Dept. of Justice posted the data on the Dept. website.”

Yup. And before they did it, who did they tell that they were going to do it? Who knew in advance? Who did they alert that they knew would want to go in and snag that data?

Everybody seems all wound up about what happened after the fact. I want to know what happened BEFORE the fact.

“The investigation, conducted by an outside law firm hired by the California Department of Justice, found that personal information for 192,000 people was downloaded 2,734 times by 507 unique IP addresses during a roughly 12-hour period in late June. All of those people had applied for a permit to carry a concealed gun.”

This text is very ambiguous. 2,734 divided by 507 equals ≈ 5.4 downloads per IP address. During a “roughly 12 hour period” (more like 18) half of which occurred overnight? Since 5.4 is the average, what was the download rate per individual IP address? And how many files were downloaded per session? How many times was the entire 192k data set downloaded? One reading of the text could be that the entire 192k data set was downloaded 507 times. Another is that the entire 192 data set dealt just with CCW permit applicants. Or that all the 507 downloaders were CCW applicants…all of whom somehow needed to access the data set an average 5.4 times. Sure.

So, which group of “all of those people” being referred to is critical. Is it the 507 downloaders? Or the 192k persons whose data was put on-line?

Unless the full report is much more detailed, this news release is an attempt at whitewashing the issue.

“Deeply angered” and “steps taken to prevent a reoccurrence” are just typical government diffuse and distract platitudes.

Who specifically got fired?
Who specifically got demoted?
Who specifically got disciplinary administrative action?

turn about is fair play... I’m sure that there are a number of patriotic Americans that are tech savy and can participate in the “doxxing” game.

Sounds like a class action to recover damages.

= = =

And it was accessed and downloaded.

News sites? Anti-gunners? Run of the mill Marxists/BLM/Antifa for theft?

Then the CA DOJ said oops.

But the material is now out there, and ‘can’t’ be blamed on them.

If your defense is that you are incompetent, and don’t know how to do your job, then the logical conclusion is that you should be fired.
