House Republicans’ speaker nominee Kevin McCarthy does not yet have enough votes to win a floor election in January, but he told reporters Tuesday he will not drop out of the running and plans to take the fight to the floor if necessary.
“We’ll have 218,” the California Republican said, referring to the number of votes necessary to win a majority of the House in the floor election. “I'll get there.”
Before the Thanksgiving recess, the House Republican Conference nominated McCarthy for speaker. He earned 188 votes in the secret-ballot conference nomination. His opponent, Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs, earned 31 and another five write-in votes went to candidates whose names were not disclosed.
McCarthy needs to win over a vast majority of those 36 opponents if he wants to be elected speaker in the January floor vote. While two House races remain uncalled, the final party split is expected to be 222-212, with one vacancy after Virginia Democratic Rep. A. Donald McEachin died Monday just weeks after being reelected.
Despite that vacancy, the majority threshold McCarthy needs to reach still remains 218 if all other members participate in the vote. The only way for McCarthy to lower that is if lawmakers are absent or vote “present,” as only members voting for a speaker candidate by name count toward determining the majority threshold.

So arrogant a$$wipe McCarthy will likely make a deal with Democrats to vote present to lower the threshold for Speaker.
Because that's what these people do.
McCarthy is the closest one to 218. Who else can get that.? Andy Biggs got 30 there’s not one person that can get 218. so McCarthy is going to be the next speaker. Do I like it? No. He’s from California for one thing. But reality will win unfortunately.
The Senators who voted for McConnell are worse. They have no excuse.
If the Dems can find a small group of RHINOs to vote with them, Liz Cheney could be the next speaker.
It’s time to move on from the Republican party. Leadership hates the base.
He can win with Dem help and be a weak leader or he can compromise with conservatives. Which path will he take?
The Uni-Party has spoken!
Conservatives will always hold their noses and vote for a RINO speaker rather than let the RATS get the speakership, but the RINOs make it clear that they will let the RATS win rather than vote for a conservative.
Same crap that happens in Texas, where the RINOs team with the Democrats to get their person as House Speaker, since the Democrats also get to vote on it (just like DC). That’s why, despite HUGE Republican majorities in the past, very little of the conservative agenda was accomplished.
We need to get McCarthy in now and begin then to work on alternatives. This purity test crap right now is going to get us Paul Ryan or a Democrat.
People need to stop being stupid…
He’s bought and paid for. He’s even less likeable at this point than Pence
Well, McCarthy can be denied 218 if the Republicans are stupid enough - but one of two things will happen as a result.
1) Democrats will be ordered to make up the deficit. They would be very happy for McCarthy to be Speaker, in fact, a disorganized and ineffective opposition to be swept away in 2024 would be better for them in some ways than an elected Speaker of their own. They have 214 votes available for this.
Either way - there are three and only three people who can become Speaker. Kevin McCarthy, Nancy Pelosi, or Hakeem Jeffries.
2) Democrats will peel off 4 RINOs and elect Hakeem Jeffries or Nancy Pelosi as Speaker. This would not necessarily be in their best interest, but it would allow them to continue the January 6 committee as is, which they seem to think is very important.
He’ll be another Useless Speaker
Of course he won’t drop out. He’s been jonesing to be Speaker since before Paul Ryan became Speaker.
That should be a disqualifier.
Fo years I've considered leaving the GOP and joining the Conservative Party in NYS. The downside is that you can't vote in GOP primaries, the upside is that elected officials want the C line so becoming involved in local politics brings influence.
Commie lite.. Not what we need...
You've hit the nail on the head. Conservatives bend and vote for the least worst alternative on the GOP side. There is no concession by the elite for conservatives, though. They will vote with the Rats rather than side with conservatives.
Here is your GOP. Know them by their enemies... it isn't the Democrats... it's us.
The RINO ideology is more important than the health of the nation. . . .
Here is your GOP. Know them by their enemies... it isn't the Democrats... it's us.
Pogo looks out over the GOP landscape...
