His claim to rule is he kept China free from Covid disaster with Zero Covid and only China is not decimated by Covid. The control of media and information is such that people believe that the rest of the world is worse. Then they saw the World Cup and all the crowds with no masks, no problems with or fear of Covid.
That was not the initial spark, many began rebelling before. The policy is insane and carried out even worse. People are sick of it. Being locked in places for weeks and months. Hauled off to camps randomly.
But, as they have kept making this more and more draconian, I have begun to wonder. Maybe the Chicoms know they’ve accidentally released another virus that is actually worse.

The housing market collapse cost A LOT of people their life savings, and with all the OTHER stuff going on (Men can’t get married if they can’t afford a “house”, and no one is paying enough for that to happen, so men can’t get married, etc.) That the peasants were getting restless. They needed to crack down on dissent, so they pulled the most recent card that worked from their control deck, and it was COVID lockdowns.

Because the exercise in control has turned out to have a silver lining - the mandated daily and sometimes twice daily tests, along with being tested before entering a public venue, are paid for, not out of the largess of the CCP, but from tax monies.
There is a move to make individuals pay for the tests out of pocket, but so far the current system is generating 1.3% of the entire Chinese budget. Desperately needed revenue ... so the testing will continue, as will the mountains of waste from the test kits. What people want is of no concern to the Party ... as long as their existence is not threatened.
