I’ve been to the Hilo side 3 times, but only day trips.
One time we did the long hike/walk to where the lava goes into the ocean.
It must have been around 7 miles each way in 50 mph winds and noon Sun.
I’d guess around 60% was “Billy goating” from lava rock to lava rock.
This was the day after hiking up and down into Polulu Valley and Waipio Valley.
We each had 16oz of water. We thought we were going to die. It was funny.
Mauna Loa is erupting on the upper Northeast Rift Zone and putting down a lava flow that has traveled roughly 6 miles from the eruptive vent, covering the Mauna Loa Weather Observatory access road with multiple flow lobes. The flow has not advanced significantly in the last several hours since this footage was taken.
