Anyone else wonder, why it was, back in the days of paper ballots, that election results were known promptly?

Now with computerized systems, vote counting can continue for weeks???

And don’t forget the recounts. A decade or so ago I remember Washington State having to recount. The pubie won the guvner race the first, second and third times. But each recount a 51 chevy would show up with another box of lost ballots in the trunk. They kept it up until the dim candidate had about 200 more votes to win. And nobody could ever explain why private vehicles were used to haul ballots?
