Actually, one thing that Castro and nudism brought to mind was the big quarrels in the Castro district over nudism. At some point in the early-mid 2000s, it became a thing among gay men to walk around naked in that nabe. They’d started off with their favorite organ hanging down from the leg of their shorts (the Castro is on the edge of the Mission, two districts that are warmer and sunnier than the rest of SF). Then they moved on to the whole butt and the glorious front as well.

It became controversial because the area has (or had) many restaurants and bars with outside dining that attracted people (gay or straight) from other parts of town, especially for brunch, and nobody liked sitting on or touching a chair or place where somebody had rested his sweaty backside or junk.

Gay groups...and I’m sure this nutcase was among them, whether or not he was actually gay...got out to defend the “right” to put your icky privates all over everybody else’s space. But a lot of gay groups...and of course the restaurant owners, many of whom were gay...opposed it, and surprisingly enough, the City of SF actually passed an ordinance banning public nudity.

I doubt that it was actually ever enforced, except in really egregious cases, but it did slow down the practice and it seems to have died out.

I always wondered about SF during their insane Covid stuff...maybe they had to wear two or three masks at a time but they could still let it all hang out?
