Corning stock fell more than 4% on Tuesday after the company reported a weaker-than-expected outlook for the current quarter.
“We now expect smartphones to be down about 12% for the year, and we expect notebook and tablet demand to decline 15%,” said Wendell Weeks, Corning CEO.
I hope y’all enjoyed peak tech.
“It’s getting ridiculous that you need to replace a smart phone every 3-4 years when the technological improvements are minimal.”
I upgrade every 2-3 years because I get “wowwed” by the new technology!
Faster processors, better screens.
I replace my TVs more often than I replace my smartphone, and in fact, I only replace my smartphone when it gets a cracked screen, which has been only twice in the last 8 years.
The tech for smartphones hasn’t really brought anything new that people need. It’s all phoning and text-messaging and social media and photos and videos, which can all be handled by the tech that’s been around for about 10 years now.
“It will be similar to when light bulb manufacterers came up with LED bulbs aka ‘Lifetime’ bulbs that are supposed to last
10K hours. This has not fully destroyed the market for old fashioned filement bulbs, but it did take a large bite out of those sales.”
Large bite? How about the whole meal! Filaments are now a niche market.
I have not replaced a bulb in years.
“Yup they make it all but impossible to replace the battery and force you to buy another.”
False. Apple will replace your battery. So will thousands of third party battery vendors.
Or you can by the kit and do it yourself.
I think your observation seems the most likely reason.

But it is handled much better by present technology. Ten year old screens an cameras are junk compared to today’s.
And processor speed and memory are so much better.
“If they could, they would have done it 20 years ago or recently, but in reality, that kind of battery tech you wish, is decades in the future, if ever. A solar panel which one can wear might be the way to go for recharging smartphones. Just make it ‘invisible’ but wearable.”
I use my “phone” a lot. typical day is about 40% of battery but can be more. If I sit on the couch I put my phone down on the wireless charger next to me. Same when I go to bed. The Always On screen serves as my bedside clock. No big deal.
The phones are to damned expensive to get a new one every time a new one comes out!! I know the younger folks like to get new latest and greatest and if you can afford a thousand bucks every couple of years PLUS the monthly bill have at it!!

I upgraded after 2 1/2 years. I got $670 trade-in on $1150 phone.
I don’t I keep current on 2- to 3-year-old Samsung phones.
“Just have a wireless charger with you at all times and everywhere. Battery will always have a charge. ;)”
Really ...
Replacement cost was $75, for an iPhone X.
Maybe $1,200 back at the end of 2017.
5 years on the original battery before replacement. That isn’t bad.
The work order includes replacing the speaker with the battery.
“Either a wireless charger or a generator.”
I have a USB power bank.
And wired chargers.
